Texas will take an additional year to pilot a controversial new state teacher evaluation system, Education Commissioner Michael Williams told federal education officials Wednesday. Tyler ISD to announce finalist for superintendent

The lone finalist for Tyler ISD’s superintendent position is expected to be announced today during the school district’s monthly board meeting. In the past six weeks, the board has conducted interviews with six candidates, all of whom had previous superintendent experience, something that was a prerequisite for the board. Calhoun County school district Superintendent Billy Wiggins is on personal leave until Aug. 18. The school board unanimously approved a personal leave of absence at its regular board meeting Wednesday, said Steve Marwitz, school board president. Neither Marwitz nor the district's attorney would say why the leave was requested. "Mr. Wiggins has several personal state leave days accumulated," said Anne Marie Odefey, the school district's attorney, in an email message. In 20 years, Belton ISD may have 29,000 students

Templeton Demographics presented a build-out and demography study to the Belton Independent School District board of trustees during a workshop Monday night. At the full build-out, Belton ISD has the potential to gain nearly 29,000 students over 20 years or more, the preliminary study showed.  Rocky Gardiner, vice president of Templeton Demographics, said the presentation gave a snapshot of where the district is today and could be in 20 or more years down the road. view article arw

Port Arthur: Committee considers $200 million bond for PAISD

Port Arthur voters may soon have to decide on whether to pass a bond proposal for the Port Arthur Independent School District. The bond could total up to $200 million.  12 News HD has learned exclusively that a bond committee has already been set up to look into the matter. Jefferson County Commissioner Michael "Shane" Sinegal is one of more than twenty citizens on a bond committee planning the proposal. Sinegal says its main goal will be to refurbish or rebuild Travis Elementary, Sam Houston Elementary, and Terrell Elementary. view article arw

Sealy ISD gives teachers, staff raises

When Sealy Independent School District teachers and staff return to school this fall they will find a boost in their paychecks. The board of trustees approved raises at its July 16 meeting ranging from 3.5 percent to 4.6 percent with teachers getting the largest increase. Administrators will see the lowest raises at 3.5 percent. All teachers will get a $2,000 raise and newer returning teachers will get a $2,500 raise to bring them above the new starting salary of $41,000 the board also approved Wednesday night. It was a little overdue. That’s what Martin Aguirre, chief executive officer of Workforce Solutions South Plains, said of Tuesday’s signing of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act to help connect employees with employers. The new federal act, which reauthorized the Workforce Investment Act that expired more than 10 years ago, was approved by the U.S. Senate on June 25 and the U.S. House on July 9 before being signed by President Barack Obama on Tuesday. view article arw

Port Arthur: PAISD looks to up enrollment

The Port Aransas ISD Board of Trustees met to discuss a 2014-15 proposed budget, “talked bonds,” and switched financial advisory services at a regular meeting on Monday, July 21. The board talked about enrollment as a high priority issue and with a projected enrollment total of 503 for the fall, the district is pinching pennies. view article arw
