Preventive Law: What To Do BEFORE You Start Your Educational Foundation

June 3008:35 AM

So you want to start an educational foundation but you don’t know where to begin.  You know that a foundation is a tax exempt entity that can receive and disperse gifts of money or other property – a Daddy Warbucks for a school district.  High priced consultants offer to give you a “turnkey” foundation run by the superintendent.  What could be better or easier?  Remember that old saying: If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Establishing a foundation may be as simple as filing a short document with the Texas Secretary of State, but making that foundation a tax exempt entity is a detailed process that is not a one-size-fits-all proposition.  Some thoughtful advance planning can make your foundation a smooth-running enterprise that will serve the needs of your school district for many years to come. view article arw

Beaumont:  UPDATE: BISD Record Review Testimony

July 1108:39 AM

KFDM News - The fate of seven Beaumont school board members and one superintendent is in the hands of the Texas Education Agency. A deputy commissioner listened to arguments in a record review -- a final chance for the district to prevent a takeover. KFDM's Justin Hinton covered the  hearing in Austin where he joins us live to explain the arguments on both sides.  The theme of today's hearing seemed to be about time. For the district... Not having enough of it to fix its problems. For the TEA -- Warning signs were presented to the district years ago with still no changes.   view article arw

Legislature must increase state contribution to teacher health care

July 1108:38 AM

The Texas State Teachers Association today urged members of two key Texas House committees to recommend that the Legislature increase the state’s contribution to health insurance costs for active school employees as well as retirees. “For years, teachers and other school workers have seen rising health care costs dig deeper and deeper into their take-home pay, and that makes it harder to keep experienced, highly qualified teachers in our children’s classrooms,” said TSTA President Rita Haecker.  “The state hasn’t increased its health care contribution for active school employees in 12 years, and with another round of premium increases coming this fall, it is time for the legislature to act.”    view article arw

As Teacher Pay Lags, Attrition and Class Size Grow
