May 15, 2008, 08:31
On Thursday May 15 at 11:30 a.m. members of Texans for School Finance Reform, State Rep. Patrick Rose, Village of Wimberley community members, other school and student leaders of Wimberley High School will meet in the Speaker's Committee Room, 2W.6 Capitol Building, with a facsimile check for $30 million, the estimated annual amount needed from the state to fund the adjustment for Chapter 41 districts. This Rally for Mid-Size Schools will include members of other mid-sized districts.
Texans for School Finance Reform and State Rep. Patrick Rose are working together to build support for extending the adjustment to Chapter 41 schools. State Rep. Patrick Rose is leading the effort in the Texas House and is building a coalition of legislators across the state. He will update the event attendees on his progress.
The Robin Hood Finance plan takes money from so-called "rich districts" and distributes it to so-called "poor districts." Many mid- sized schools, such as Wimberley Independent School District, are unfairly penalized because of the law and have to cut or severely reduce programs such as Music, Art, Choir, Spanish, Teen Leadership, and other elective classes in order to be in compliance with the law. Teacher raises have also been a large part of the cutbacks.
The Texans for School Finance Reform group hope to bring attention to this unfair situation and hope to keep it in the forefront of the next legislative session that will start in the Spring of 2009. If you have any questions concerning the Rally for Mid-Size Schools please contact:
