Key State Legislators to Make Major School Finance Announcement

Senator Leticia Van de Putte and Representative Diane Patrick will make a major announcement regarding public school finance and the 81st Legislative session at the 9th Annual Equity Center School Finance and Legislative Conference Sunday in Austin, preceding Midwinter Conference. This will be the first opportunity to hear details and ask questions related to the General appropriations bill filed yesterday. The bill appropriated $1.9 billion in funds for education contingent upon the passage and enactment of legislation that would return the school finance system to a formula-driven system that improves equity and reduces recapture. Dr. Wayne Pierce, Executive Director of the Equity Center, indicated in our conversation yesterday that restoring the formula system would be a major topic of the conference, and this would be a great opportunity for school administrators to discuss the issue directly with legislators. - js
