How does the state deficit affect local schools?
Texas lawmakers are looking at a multi-billion dollar deficit for education, even with their rainy day fund. All across the state, programs and personnel are being cut. But local districts like Amarillo and Canyon should be able to side step those cuts, at least for now.

Performance bonus upheld for Dallas ISD teachers with lower attendance rates

Editorial: Moving school start dates is a slippery slope
Local control issue...Just when Texas families have settled back into a more traditional summer schedule, school districts are grumbling again. Some districts remain miffed that the state has mandated a late-August start date. And when lawmakers convene next year, lobbying for local calendar control is likely to follow. But this is one area where firm guidance from the state is needed. The Legislature should reject calls for a return to a start date free-for-all.

Students largely appear to be heeding warnings about traveling to Mexico during spring break
FORT WORTH -- Students appear to be following warnings to avoid parts of Mexico during spring break. Europe is emerging as a top destination. And some students at Texas Christian University said they plan to spend next week in Guatemala or on South Padre Island off the Texas coast.

La Marque: LMISD could close school, cut jobs
Budget cuts may compel the La Marque school district to shut down one of its campuses and reconfigure others, district officials said Wednesday. The school board also is considering layoffs to cut $4.9 million from next year’s budget. It eventually might hike the tax rate by as much as 10 percent to offset a budget shortfall.

The nation's governors and state school chiefs will propose standards today for what students should learn in English and math, from kindergarten through high school, a crucial step in President Barack Obama's campaign to raise academic standards across the country. The blueprint aims to replace a hodgepodge of state benchmarks with common standards.

Bryan school board approves calendar
Bryan school board members have approved the 2010-11 school year calendar. Under the adopted calendar, school will begin Aug. 23 and end May 19. Spring break is scheduled the same week as Texas A&M's, which is March 14 through March 18.

Scott sees value in common core standards, still hesitant
Texas Education Commissioner Robert Scott has been one of the nation’s most
vocal opponents to an effort by other states to develop for the
nation’s public schools.
He has said the Obama administration’s embrace of the effort is a harbinger
of a federal takeover of public schools. And Texas’ standards are far superior,
a recent news release said.

Dallas: Crandall, Skyline seniors take top honors at DMN High School Journalism Day and Competition 2:24 PM CT
A 18-year-old senior at Crandall High School was named the best photographer among all competitors in The Dallas Morning News High School Journalism Day and Competition. James Thompson won first place in two photography categories – photo portfolio and feature photo – and one of his news photos was an honorable mention. The judges who chose James' work for sweepstakes honors said they were impressed with the "visual variety" in his diverse portfolio.

Irving ISD trustees spent quite a bit of time at their noon work session Monday discussing whether future high school graduations would be moved from the Potter's House church in Dallas to the new Irving Convention Center. Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau director Maura Gast appeared before the board to make the pitch.

South San ISD career education center teaches wood working trades
Zamora Middle School received some new cabinets for its library, thanks to the efforts of the South San Antonio ISD mill and cabinetry class at the career and technology education center. Nine students, under the watchful eye of first-year teacher Conrad Antoon, built the cabinets and later helped install them in the library. The cabinets will be used to help Zamora Middle School students store their backpacks and other personal possessions instead of using the floor while visiting the library.

Texas teen arrested, counterfeited cash on PC
San Antonio police have arrested a teenager suspected of printing fake money on his home computer after the teen's friend spent some of the counterfeit cash at a high school cafeteria, the San Antonio Express-News reported. Jose Roberto Rodriguez, 17, was in the Bexar County Jail on one count of forgery - counterfeit currency, the newspaper reported online. A judge set bail at $5,000.

Tomball: Some students affected by junior high zoning changes may choose school
Zoning changes for Willow Wood Junior High and Tomball Junior High take effect for the 2010-2011 school year, and with it come the zones for Tomball Memorial High School and Tomball High School when the new high school opens in August 2011.
The new zoning map designating student attendance is set to go before the Tomball Independent School District Board of Trustees for approval in April, but in the mean time, district officials are putting other plans in place.

Baird students' family questions taping punishment review
Family members of students involved in the taping incident at Baird High School in January posed questions to administrators and board members during a school board meeting Wednesday. Family members expressed concern regarding the speed of the complaint process that they hope will overturn the students’ punishment. School officials and administrators declined to comment.

Northside starts family reading club
Carol Jordan, Northside Elementary librarian, has started a Family Reading Club at the beginning of this school year.The objective of the book club is to encourage students to read and study more. The meetings are held the third Tuesday of every month.At each meeting, students learn a new skill and are assigned a project over it.

Corpus Christi: CCISD school naming committee to meet March 30
CORPUS CHRISTI — There are 39 names suggested for the city’s newest elementary school and on March 30 those who nominated them can tell a committee why to consider them as namesakes. Former educators, business leaders and a fallen soldier are among a dozen new names submitted. Corpus Christi Independent School District trustees are considering names for a school that will replace Carroll Lane and Casa Linda elementary schools. The new school is scheduled to open next school year at the site of the former Carroll Lane Elementary, 4120 Carroll Lane.

Montgomery County: Counselors offer support for KCMS students
Extra counselors are on hand for students at Keefer Crossing Middle School after the tragic death of a 7th grade classmate. The 13 year old student died after DPS troopers say a vehicle struck him Saturday morning as he and another boy were walking along FM 1485.

School officials keep eyes on future
As school districts throughout Brazoria County celebrate Public Schools Week with open houses and other activities, officials are looking toward the future with hope.
The year has been a tough one as districts struggle to maintain well-run schools while facing budget cuts. Officials say they expect to see even less state funding in the future, but believe necessity is the mother of invention.
“I think we’re going to have to change,” Brazosport ISD Deputy Superintendent Dennis McNaughten said. McNaughten believes districts will come up with better uses of taxpayer money.

Giddings and Turner: How to help meet the state's higher education needs
Paul Quinn exists today, because in 1872 African Methodist Episcopal preachers and former slaves understood the importance of education. In a one-room building with few resources, Paul Quinn College was founded as the bridge to a better life for former slaves. Given the historical and cultural obstacles of the day, this was nothing less than a miracle based on hard work and determination. Today, the need for higher education is even greater, and we must work to preserve all opportunities for higher education that currently exist. With enough will and conviction, Paul Quinn can be lifted from its current state and restored to its former financial and academic integrity.
