We're Not Gonna Take It
All is not well in Texas schools. After billions in cuts and tens of thousands of teachers laid off, students now cram into overcrowded classrooms across the state. Field trips are canceled, and lunch is served for hours to accommodate the crowds. There is a pallor, a stagnancy crusting over the system like old coffee at the bottom of the teachers’ lounge pot. Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his hole Thursday morning and saw his shadow, which means, of course, some poor West Texas high school will have to endure brutal travel schedules in the University Interscholastic League’s biennial realignment and reclassification. In effect, UIL realignment is the perpetual Groundhog Day. View Article ]   Feb 3, 2012, 08:32

Protesting pro-testers
While speaking before 4,000 school officials at the Texas Association of School Administrators’ midwinter conference, Texas Education Commissioner Robert Scott said that standardized testing in Texas public schools has become a “perversion of its original intent,” according to The Texas Tribune. Scott received a standing ovation when he described personal frustration with the bureaucratic complicity evident in schools today as a result of the current testing mechanism. School testing is lauded by legislators from both parties, and Scott’s honesty is a refreshing counterpoint to voices that repeatedly try to address ineffective testing with more testing. Show hogs make the prime cut
The steers over in the Moncrief Building are the headliners at the Fort Worth Stock Show. There's little debate about that. On the other end of livestock barn row, far from the blow-dryers and primping kits of the junior steer show, are the Swine Barn and Sheep Barn. Both are crammed with Durocs, Hampshires, Chester whites and other manner of big-bottomed species. View Article ]   Feb 3, 2012, 07:30

Commissioner Scott delivers no-holds-barred speech at Midwinter
Commissioner's Speech - Texas Education Commissioner Robert Scott delivered a surprising speech to the thousands in attendance at TASA’s 2012 Midwinter Conference Tuesday afternoon, invoking a pull-no-punches tone and sharing his frank opinions on the state’s accountability program, his frustration with bureaucratic meddling – both the feds’ and the state’s - and even the names of a few folks who make him mad enough to want to stay in an incredibly difficult job that makes him lose sleep and miss meals. Criticism from Education Commissioner Draws Backlash
Some high profile members of the education community aren’t pleased with Texas Education Agency Commissioner Robert Scott’s speech yesterday criticizing the role of testing in Texas public schools. Speaking to 4,000 school officials at the Texas Association of School Administrators‘ annual midwinter conference, Scott received a standing ovation when he called for an accountability system that measured “what happens on every single day in the life of a school besides testing day.” He also said that he would not certify a ban on social promotion next year unless schools received more money from the state to offer remedial classes to students. Effort to save historic Booker T. High gains steam
Booker T. Washington is a giant in Houston's history books - the city's first African-American high school and later home to its first magnet school, a renowned engineering program. But time and neglect have left the Independence Heights campus a shell of its former self. Enrollment has fallen to a historic low of 823 students - down from 1,520 in 1995. Lufkin High School to learn its new 2012-14 district today
UIL: Earlier this year, Lufkin ISD Superintendent Roy Knight said a move to Class 4A could be beneficial for Lufkin High School’s athletics program, but that the chances of that move were very slim. On Wednesday, a day before the Texas University Interscholastic League’s reclassification and district realignment data is released, Knight said he would “stick with my earlier prediction.” View Article ]   Feb 2, 2012, 08:35
