Coach accused of improper relationship with student
COLDSPRING, TX (KTRK) -- A high school basketball coach and teacher in San Jacinto County is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with at least one student.
The teacher resigned late last month when the allegations first surfaced, but we've learned investigators are talking to more people, worried that there may be more students involved.

Region 14: Association honors school officials
Four area school administrators have been recognized for their excellence by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals.
Paul Lippe and Bobby Easterling, principals of Jim Ned High School and Jim Ned Middle School in Tuscola, respectively, were awarded the annual Outstanding Principal Award for Region 14. Mignon Lawson, assistant principal at Mann Middle School, and Andrew Prince, associate principal at Cooper High School, received the annual Outstanding Assistant Principal Award for Region 14.

Corpus Christi: Students, parents speak in support of Ray coach
About a dozen Ray High School students and parents told CCISD trustees on Monday they support athletic director and coach Randy Perez and were concerned about his job status.
Perez, who couldn’t be reached for comment Monday night, didn’t attend the school board meeting during which students and parents said Perez had gotten an unsatisfactory job evaluation.

READ! ON A WINTER DAY five years ago, Doug Lemov realized he had a problem. After a successful career as a teacher, a principal and a charter-school founder, he was working as a consultant, hired by troubled schools eager — desperate, in some cases — for Lemov to tell them what to do to get better. There was no shortage of prescriptions at the time for how to cure the poor performance that plagued so many American schools. Proponents of No Child Left Behind saw standardized testing as a solution. President Bush also championed a billion-dollar program to encourage schools to adopt reading curriculums with an emphasis on phonics. Others argued for smaller classes or more parental involvement or more state financing.

Houston: HISD cutting school cafeteria jobs and wages
More than 425 cafeteria workers in the Houston school district will have their wages slashed this month, dozens of other positions will be cut and students likely will pay more for lunch next year to cover a multimillion budget shortfall.

TRS-ActiveCare insurance premiums to rise by 7%
The Teacher Retirement System Board of Directors met in late February 2010 for three days in Katy, Texas, with a lengthy agenda that included extensive overviews of the different divisions within the TRS agency. The Board also took action on a handful of items, most notably approving changes in premium costs and in plan design of the health insurance plans under its jurisdiction.

Odessa: Trustees hire new principal
Ector County Independent School District trustees held a special board meeting Thursday evening to hear a Level III Grievance for former district transportation employee Eddie Cobb. Cobb was dismissed from his job last October after an incident with a child on a school bus, he said. Cobb stated that he had told the student to stop misbehaving but did not physically reprimand the child. Cobb filed a Level I grievance with ECISD after being dismissed for unprofessional conduct. “I was just trying to do my job as I was told to,” Cobb said.

Brownsville: BISD hires key administrators
The Brownsville Independent School District on Tuesday hired longtime budget administrator Tony Fuller as chief financial officer and named Janna Hawkins, a former area assistant superintendent, as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.
