Kaufman: KISD board approves new codes of conduct
Life's not fair, but Kaufman ISD school board members made strides to increase the fairness in local schools as they approved a measure that standardized codes of conduct for students involved in extracurricular activities. Now students involved in athletics, cheerleading and Lionettes will all have equivalent expectations. Previously, students that violated the code of conduct were subject to differing levels of punishment. However, coaches and sponsors worked together to create reasonable expectations for students with similar punishments. View Article ]   Mar 12, 2010, 07:45

Henderson: HISD will decide on school uniform plan for Northside, HMS
Standardized dress codes proposed for Northside Intermediate and Henderson Middle School will most likely go before Henderson Independent School District trustees next month. During Monday's regular monthly board meeting, deputy superintendent Dr. Raylene Conner told trustees about the results of surveys sent home to parents of children who will be attending Northside, HMS or Henderson High School next year. Results from parents were favorable at Northside and HMS, Conner said, but parents of HHS students voted against the proposal. Northside parents favored a standardized dress code by a 3-to-1 margin, Conner said, and HMS parents were in favor by 2 to 1. View Article ]   Mar 11, 2010, 07:45

Fort Bend ISD trustees approve financial exigency resolution
The message was clear at Monday night’s regular board meeting as board members declared a “financial exigency” in response to the district’s current budget crisis. “Without a significant change in the district’s expenditure patterns or a change in the state funding formula, the district is projected to be fiscally unstable in three years,” board president Bob Broxson said. The declaration allows the administration to restructure programs to allow the district to remain “structurally sound” and identify certain areas for possible reductions in the workforce. San Angelo School board revises calendar because of snow day
SAN ANGELO, Texas — Shelly Hullihen, assistant superintendent of educational support services, asked the San Angelo school board to approve a revision to the spring semester calendar in the wake of the Feb. 23 snow storm. The original calendar had a day to allow for bad weather early in the semester, but also provided 176 instructional days for the students, she said at the San Angelo Independent School District’s board meeting Monday. Texas Education Agency requires students to have 175 instructional days in the school year so the missed school day does not have to be made up, Hullihen said. View Article ]   Mar 9, 2010, 08:03

Embattled school trustee seeking re-election
After staying mum for more than a month on whether or not she would seek re-election, Hitchcock school trustee Shirley Price filed her paperwork on Monday to hold onto her District 2 trustee seat. The trustee, who has been under fire and was rebuked by the school board for turning a motivational speech to a group of fifth- through eighth-grade girls into a chat about sex, will be challenged in her quest to serve a second term. Price, a retired NASA human resources specialist, will face administrative assistant Hayley Winkelmann in the race. Price is among six incumbent school board trustees who drew challengers for the office they hold. View Article ]   Mar 9, 2010, 07:45

Beeville ISD trustees opted to delay spending between $1 million and $1.3 million for new bleachers at the high school stadium until they hear from the public. Trustee Tom Beasley, during Tuesday’s afternoon meeting, said that he was concerned that the public didn’t know the amount of money the trustees would be spending. “I don’t see anything in the agenda item that we are going to spend $1.3 million,” Beasley said. The agenda item did identify the bleachers and press box replacement but didn’t include a price tag for the work. View Article ]   Mar 8, 2010, 07:46

Abilene: AISD reviews custodial bids
Assistant Superintendent Charles Perkins remembers the rough transition five years ago when the Abilene Independent School District privatized custodial services with Sodexo with hopes to save money and district jobs. When Sodexo took over in the fall of 2005, some schools ran short of paper supplies. Others said their rooms were poorly cleaned. Pearland: Tempers flare at PISD board meeting
Pearland Independent School District’s board of trustees exchanged heated words Tuesday night during discussion of a recent handgun incident on district property, the second incident involving firearms in less than a year. “Dr. Cain, it bothers me that there’s an atmosphere that’s been created in Pearland ISD where guns on district property are either no big deal or nothing to worry about,” Thomas Heinz said during public comments. “I have been teaching for 20 years and have never heard of a gun remaining on site. I have also never heard of a person committing an offense going unpunished. In less than a year, it has happened on Pearland ISD property twice.” View Article ]   Mar 4, 2010, 07:45
