(Austin)—January 2017 is School Board Recognition Month, a time to honor the more than 7,200 locally elected leaders who step forward to serve without pay on local boards to ensure Texas students have the best schools possible. Each year the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) encourages Texans to show appreciation to these men and women for their unfailing commitment to our state’s future.

“Please join me in recognizing the service of local board members as they dedicate themselves to providing excellent public schools,” said James B. Crow, TASB executive director. “The long hours and responsibilities of school board service make it a task that only a few are willing to bear. However, those who serve as local trustees embrace the challenges, demonstrating their desire that every student have the best opportunities to succeed. Trustees work closely with parents and educators to develop sound education policies in their districts and set high standards for student success.

“In communities across the state, school board members volunteer their time and talents to see that Texas schools provide excellent education experiences for all of our children. We urge every community to thank local board members and support them as they tackle this important job. Join us in applauding their service to our students, our communities, and this state,” he said.

TASB is a nonprofit association established in 1949 to serve local Texas school boards. School board members are the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state. The districts they represent serve approximately 5.3 million public school students.
