AUSTIN, TEXAS — Today District Court Judge John Dietz declared the Texas school finance system to be unconstitutional on the grounds that it is inadequate and inefficient. Read the ruling here.

In response to today's ruling, Center for Public Policy Priorities Executive Director Ann Beeson issued the following statement:

"Today's decision confirms what the five million Texas school children returning to classes this month already know – overcrowded classes, outdated materials, and insufficient counselors are barriers to educational success. Every child deserves a high quality education, and this ruling confirms that the Legislature needs to invest more in Texas.

"Despite the likely appeal of this ruling, there is no need for the Legislature to wait for Supreme Court action before exploring solutions. The Center for Public Policy Priorities looks forward to working with members of the Legislature during the 2015 session to craft a school finance system that backs up standards with resources and distributes funds equitably."
