PSJA ISD, City of Pharr host Victory Celebration for statewide health challenge
PHARR – Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD (PSJA ISD) in collaboration with It's Time Texas and the City of Pharr hosted the first ever PSJA Tri-City Victory Celebration on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at the PSJA Stadium.
The event celebrated this year’s victory in the It’s Time Texas statewide health competition sponsored by H-E-B.
For the 4th consecutive year, PSJA ISD was named the winner of the Large School District Category with more than 3.3 million points collected by students, staff members and families participating in the challenge.
The City of Pharr also earned 1st place in the Medium Community category. Coming in the top 5 communities of the Small Community Category, the City of Alamo earned 3rd Place and the City of San Juan 4th place, each with over a million points.
The It’s Time Texas Community Challenge is an annual statewide competition that unites cities, school districts, businesses, and organizations with the common goal of transforming their community’s health. This year nearly 300 communities from across the State of Texas competed from Jan. 3 - Feb. 27.
The event included remarks from PSJA ISD and City of Pharr, City of San Juan and City of Alamo leaders as well as an Awards Presentation led by It’s Time Texas recognizing these collective efforts.
While all 43 PSJA ISD schools played a vital role in winning the statewide competition, PSJA ISD and It's Time Texas recognized the following campuses for winning the 4th Annual PSJA Healthy School Challenge by earning the most points in their category:
Amanda Garza-Peña Elementary with 262,400 points (2nd year in a row)
Audie Murphy Middle School with 785,850 points (3rd year in a row)
PSJA Early College High School with 262,200 points (4th year in a row)
Additionally, the top PSJA ISD Student and Staff Participants were also recognized for their participation

Patricia Solis, Instructional Aide at Ford Elementary (52K+) - Pharr
Esperanza Quezada, Teacher at Ford Elementary (51K+) - Pharr
DiGabriel Camero, Counselor Garza-Pena Elementary (50K) - San Juan
Top 3 Student Participants
Ian Luna, 11th grader at PSJA Collegiate HS (22K+) - San Juan
Robert Acosta, 8th Grader at Liberty MS (10K+) - Pharr
Audrey Ovalle, 9th Grader at PSJA Collegiate HS (8K+) - San Juan
"Today's celebration is a demonstration of what our PSJA Family can do when we work together towards a common goal," said PSJA Superintendent Dr. Jorge L. Arredondo. "Earning more than 3 million points as a school district shows the tremendous districtwide effort to eat healthier, be active, and truly lead healthier lives, which includes mental health. Our victory speaks volumes of the dedication, commitment, and perseverance of our PSJA Family for health and wellness."
