Joe’s Commentary: What is a VATRE?
In previous years we held a “TRE” (Tax Ratification Election) to adopt a higher tax rate but the terminology has changed. If a district adopts a tax rate that exceeds its VATR - (Voter Approved Tax Rate) - it must hold a VATRE (election) for the voters to approve the tax rate.
The following link is TASB’s excellent guidance that outlines the procedures a school district must follow in conducting a voter-approval - tax - rate election (this will be helpful).
- This link is an informational video from Lake Travis ISD which is holding a VATRE on November 2, 2021.
- At this point I am informed that Pearland ISD, Victoria ISD, Junction ISD and Lake Travis ISD are holding VATRE’s and have information posted on their websites.
If you are not holding a VATRE this year, make a file and put this information in it; you will likely be holding a VATRE in the future. - js - webmaster@texasisd.com
