Coach Nick Herrmann was sentenced to 218 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to sexually abusing a 17-year-old student. A former wrestling champ-turned-coach in the Amarillo Independent School District was sentenced to 18 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to sexually abusing a 17-year-old female student he groomed for months through thousands of text messages. Nicholas Jade “Nick” Herrmann, 32, was an assistant boys’ wrestling coach at Tascosa High School in Amarillo ISD when he was first arrested in January 2025 on a state felony charge of improper relationship between educator and student. Herrmann was allowed to resign when the accusations surfaced. Both Herrmann and the student initially denied the allegations. But investigators found evidence that from February 2024 through January 2025, the coach exchanged more than 4,000 text messages with the girl and eventually enticed her into having sex with him. The federal government charged Herrmann with enticement of a minor in May 2025. The law defines “minor” as under the age of 18 years. In January 2026, Herrmann pleaded guilty to the federal charge.

Canutillo Independent School District has appointed Erika Pasieczny, Ph.D, as principal of Alderete Middle School and Veronica Cervantes as principal of Davenport Elementary School. Pasieczny most recently served as principal of Wiggs Middle School in El Paso ISD and previously led Ascher Silberstein Elementary School in Dallas ISD. Cervantes joins Canutillo ISD after serving as an assistant principal in El Paso ISD and has more than 25 years of experience in education as a teacher, instructional specialist and campus leader.

She was out of jail on a $25,000 bond when the second charge was filed.

The Keller ISD Board of the Trustees met Thursday June 25, 2026, to discuss the general fund budget. Shayma Alzubi, the Muslim educator reassigned from her role as Western Hills High School principal after online backlash over her past social media posts, is suing Fort Worth ISD in federal court. The June 18 lawsuit was filed in the Northern District of Texas. The lawsuit alleges the FWISD violated Alzubi’s First Amendment guarantee of free speech and 14th Amendment equal protection rights after announcing her promotion. The complaint asks a judge to reinstate Alzubi as Western Hills High School principal for next school year. It also seeks damages, attorney fees and litigation costs. Gadeir Abbas, a Council on American-Islamic Relations attorney representing Alzubi, said the lawsuit could end quickly if FWISD restores her to the role it announced in May.

Fifty-five El Paso Independent School District employees are losing their jobs after the board of trustees took a series of votes Monday to terminate their contracts for the 2026-27 school year The vote was the final step needed to lay off dozens of employees, including teachers, instructional coaches and social workers, who received notices last week informing them their positions were identified for elimination as part of a reduction in force “Today is just one of the most difficult days we’ll ever have as trustees,” board President Leah Hanany said during a news conference after the meeting. “We know that what we’re doing is making a very concerted and valiant, to be frank, effort to align our budget to what needs of kids are in the classrooms. This board has been so committed to doing that work.” Hanany said other at-will positions that don’t require contracts may still be cut by the district’s administration without going to the board for a vote, but did not say how many could be impacted or when the decision will be made.

Counselors could be among the areas impacted by Austin ISD’s proposed budget cuts as the district works to close a projected $181 million budget deficit. Declining enrollment and mounting financial pressures are forcing El Paso ISD to eliminate nearly 250 positions across the district, according to a notice filed with the Texas Workforce Commission.
