During the fall of 2019, Kermit ISD stepped up as a leader in Robotics Education throughout West Texas and Region 18. With the addition of a 4th grade through 12th grade robotics program throughout the district, every Kermit ISD campus now includes robotics clubs and competitive teams. Kermit ISD Superintendent Joe Lopez stated,

"Robotics programs not only increase the offerings and opportunities to our students, but they can also push advanced students to their next level of learning while providing an educational, extracurricular 'home' to students that may still be looking for their sense of belonging in their school. Robotics programs can be valuable to students, schools, and communities in many ways." With support from Shell Exploration and Production, Kermit ISD has grown from a middle school robotics program competing in FIRST competitions to a district-wide robotics program also competing in TCEA robotics competitions and fielding five teams this year. Kermit ISD has stepped up as the host site for this year's TCEA Area 18 Robotics Competition and, in December 2019, Kermit ISD hosted TCEA robotics professional development as an opportunity to support all schools in West Texas. Kermit ISD Chief Technology Officer and TCEA Area 18 Director Mark Patrick stated, "In Kermit ISD, we are using our robotics program as an introduction to coding education at each campus as our student technology offerings grow. Robotics programs allow our students to be celebrated for their academic pursuits, engineering, and problem solving while also allowing students to explore career opportunities in growing technology fields through our community partnerships." Kermit ISD will host the TCEA Area 18 Robotics competition at Kermit Junior High School on Saturday, January 18th, 2020 at 9am.
