AUSTIN, Texas — Between a pandemic, natural disasters, and everyday challenges that come with being an adolescent, students’ needs now stretch far “beyond” academics.“We're thinking about life beyond school, we think about what are the tools needed for students to be successful ?” said Dr. Twyla Williams  Austin Independent School District’s counseling crisis and mental health director Dr. Twyla Williams says, one of the tools the district is using is social-emotional learning known as SEL. It works by integrating lessons on feelings, social interaction and mental wellness in curriculum and daily campus activities to help students address and navigate those difficulties.
