Statement from TASB on school finance reform compromise announced by Gov. Greg Abbott
The Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) commends Texas House and Senate members for working together and with Gov. Abbott to develop a school finance and property tax reform proposal that provides an unprecedented level of resources for Texas public school students and teachers.
At the same time, the deal guarantees that the state will start moving towards shouldering its share of public education funding by lessening some of the property tax burden felt by local taxpayers.
Legislators have updated a severely antiquated system to pave the way for our students’ educational success and a brighter future for Texas.
TASB is a nonprofit association established in 1949 to serve local Texas school boards. School board members are the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state. The districts they represent serve about 5.4 million students.
