This story has been updated with reaction from Meria Carstarphen. The board of Atlanta Public Schools will not renew its contract with Superintendent Meria Carstarphen. Board Chairman Jason Esteves came out of a three-hour, closed-door board meeting on Monday morning and said there was not a majority board consensus to extend Carstarphen’s contract past its expiry on June 30, 2020. Esteves said that he and Board Vice Chair Eshé Collins had worked to see if there was some sort of opportunity for an extension, but that after numerous discussions with the board and with Carstarphen, no opportunity was found. view article arw

As Keith McBurnett enters his eighth year as the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District superintendent, he received a big show of support from the school board. The La Vernia school board late last week put off a decision on the possible dismissal of Superintendent Trent Lovette after a cheerleader alleged he touched her inappropriately at a football game, KSAT reported. The La Vernia High School student filed an incident report with the Sinton Police Department on Thursday, saying that “she felt a hand slide back and forth on her lower back” as she stood on the track and turned around to discover it was Lovette. view article arw

The Canutillo Independent School District superintendent got a raise Monday night in addition to a contract extension. According to a news release from the district, Superintendent Pedro Galaviz will receive a four percent increase in pay following a 5-1 vote by the school board trustees. New Waco Independent School District Superintendent Susan Kincannon may have started the school year about two weeks late, but she seems to be keeping up with her lessons. Kincannon’s first day as superintendent in Waco was Thursday, after the board of trustees voted 5-2 to hire her Aug. 29. Mike Gilbert, who’s served as superintendent at White Oak ISD since 2006, is saying goodbye to the district. “It’s been both an honor and a privilege to work with White Oak ISD for the past 13 years,” Gilbert wrote in a letter to trustees late last month announcing his retirement. “This is a special place full of outstanding educators, top-notch students and great leadership, both employed and elected by the district.” view article arw

If his face seems familiar, it's for a good reason: Former Wells ISD superintendent Dale Morton is back in town as interim superintendent until a new leader is hired. “When I came back as interim, I was tremendously impressed with state of the district,” said Morton, who retired in 2016, succeeded by James Moore, who resigned in July to take a job with Ennis ISD as its Director of Accountability and Compliance. “It seems to me that people are really appreciative of Mr. Moore, who has done some great work – the A's on the state report card is because of the work that Mr. Moore and his team did.” view article arw

Evan Cardwell is replacing Ty Spitzer as the superintendent of Newcastle ISD and said he has enjoyed the start of his first school year as the man in charge. Cardwell said Spitzer, who has been in the position since the early 1990s’, made the decision to step down in the spring. Texas is pretty good at ranking schools, and now it has simplified that process with the new A to F accountability ratings. Those campuses that got As and Bs presumably are considered successful, those that got Cs are considered so-so and those schools that got tagged with Ds and Fs are looked down upon as failures or near-failures. Most of the state’s 8,000-plus school campuses got As or Bs, but the real question is, what will it take to make all of Texas’ public schools successful? view article arw
