Gov. Greg Abbott demands Cy-Fair ISD cancel Islamic Games event: ‘Not welcome in Texas’

January 2208:46 AM

Gov. Greg Abbott sent a letter to Cy-Fair ISD leaders Wednesday demanding that they cancel a sporting event with the Islamic Games of North America scheduled for later this year, citing alleged ties to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which Abbott recently declared a "foreign terrorist organization."   "You cannot invite such dangers through the front doors of our schools," he wrote. "Radical Islamic extremism is not welcome in Texas — and certainly not in our schools."  The move comes after the Dallas-area Grapevine-Colleyville ISD canceled a similar event on Tuesday, saying that they had learned that CAIR New Jersey was a sponsor of a related event at one point, according to news reports.  view article  arw

For the Fort Worth Stock Show, it’s (icy) business as usual

January 2205:54 AM

It wouldn’t be the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo without bad weather.  The winter storm expected to blow through North Texas on Friday and Saturday may disrupt attendance and impact outdoor activities such as the midway or petting zoo; otherwise, the stock show will operate as usual, spokesman Matt Brockman said.   “If it’s sleeting or icy, no one’s going to want to be outside, so those parts of the show will likely close,” he said.   The Fort Worth Stock Show closed in 2021 during COVID-19, a year when Texas had a record cold wave, and during World War II. However, those closures were not weather related.  view article  arw

Saying it was at fault, Lake Worth school board won’t fight TEA’s takeover

January 2108:47 AM

The Lake Worth school board voted unanimously Tuesday night to not appeal a decision by the Texas Education Agency to take over the struggling district. Board members voted to not fight the TEA takeover and waived the school district’s ability to ask the State Office of Administrative Hearings to review Commissioner of Education Mike Morath’s decision to remove Superintendent Mark Ramirez and all current members of the school board.  Read more at: https://www.star-telegram.com/news/local/education/article314393904.html#storylink=cpy view article  arw

Defense rests in former Uvalde school officer’s trial, closing arguments begin Wednesday

January 2105:00 AM

Attorneys for Adrian Gonzales, the former Uvalde school police officer who was first on scene at the Robb Elementary massacre in 2022, have rested their case Tuesday afternoon, in a trial where prosecutors say he failed to delay or stop the shooter.  Prosecutors rested Tuesday morning after calling 35 witnesses over eight days, which at times included heated testimony. The defense called only two witnesses over the course of two hours. Jury charges will be read Wednesday morning, followed by closing arguments.   view article  arw

Trial of former Uvalde CISD officer recesses early Thursday due to family emergency of jury member by: Dylan McKim

January 2008:40 AM

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Nexstar) — The ninth day of the trial against former Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District police officer Adrian Gonzales continues in the Nueces County courthouse on Thursday.  On Wednesday, the courtroom was still tense after Tuesday’s outburst from Velma Lisa Duran, the sister of Robb Elementary teacher Irma Garcia, who was killed in the shooting.  “Y’all are saying she didn’t lock her door,” Duran shouted as she was removed from the courtroom by deputies. “She went into the fatal funnel!” The fatal funnel is a tactical term used by law enforcement to describe an area, like a doorway, where a police officer does not have cover and can be shot. view article  arw

Preventive Law: New Year, New(ish) Grievance Procedures: A Review of the Recent Addition of Chapter 26A

January 0701:38 PM

The 89th legislative session has produced a staggering number of changes to the landscape of Texas education. Perhaps one of the more jarring changes was the addition of chapter 26A to the Texas Education Code. This new chapter codifies the grievance provisions that school districts are required to implement in policy. Some of the requirements in the Chapter simply mirror the procedures already common amongst school districts, such as the use of a multi-tiered grievance appeal process. Others, however, depart from the usual grievance procedures or create new procedures entirely. This article will highlight some of the largest departures from past grievance procedures and discuss the implications of these changes for Texas school districts.

Former Uvalde schools officer found not guilty in trial over his response to Robb Elementary shooting

January 2208:56 AM

Jurors deliberated for more than seven hours before finding Adrian Gonzalez not guilty in the first trial over the response to the attack that killed 19 children and two teachers. A former police officer was acquitted Wednesday evening of charges he failed in his duties to confront the gunman at an Uvalde, Texas, elementary school during the critical opening minutes of what would become one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history. view article  arw

How Texas is getting ready for this weekend’s winter storm

January 2208:50 AM

State and local officials say they’re better prepared than they were five years ago when Winter Storm Uri blanketed the state, killing hundreds and leaving scores without power and water.  Nearly five years after Winter Storm Uri sparked widespread power outages and killed hundreds of Texans, officials and residents are once more girding for a round of severe winter weather that will blanket large parts of the state.  Dangerously cold temperatures from an arctic blast will descend upon the state beginning Friday morning, and with the cold come chances of wintry precipitation in the form of snow, sleet and freezing rain. That winter blast is expected to grip the state from Friday evening to early next week. view article  arw

See the books and Bible passages Texas wants to require in all public schools

January 2208:46 AM

The state of Texas is proposing a list of literary works, from nursery rhymes and novels to Bible passages, that would become required reading in all English classrooms statewide.  The list, the first of its kind in the country, sets mandatory titles for every grade from kindergarten to high school. The Texas Education Agency, which drafted the list that will be voted on next week, says the goal is to create a standard “literary canon.”  The genres vary, from fairy tales and picture books for younger students to historical speeches and full novels in high school. Ten excerpts from the Old and New Testaments are also included, such as “The Shepherd’s Psalm” for seventh graders and the Eight Beatitudes from the book of Matthew in the eighth grade.  view article  arw

Court Crushes ‘Frivolous’ Keller ISD Voting-District Lawsuit

January 2208:45 AM

A federal judge found the liberal lawsuit against the school district “frivolous, unreasonable, and without foundation.”  In a big win for the Keller Independent School District, a federal judge dismissed a voting rights lawsuit led by left-leaning activists, which had attempted to revoke the district’s decades‑old system for electing trustees as racially discriminatory.  A January 15 opinion by U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor found the suit “frivolous, unreasonable, and without foundation.”  O’Connor dismissed all claims with prejudice, awarded Keller ISD its attorneys’ fees, and ordered the plaintiff to show cause for why sanctions should not be imposed. view article  arw

A non-profit fed thousands of hungry Dallas ISD students. A CBS News Texas investigation found, when the work stopped, the fundraising didn’t.

January 2208:37 AM

"Feeding kids. Fueling futures." That's the motto of Hunger Busters, a small but well-connected nonprofit in West Dallas. The idea is to provide a sandwich and sides at the end of the school day to thousands of "food-insecure" Dallas Independent School District students who might not otherwise get dinner at home. A CBS News Texas investigation, though, found that's no longer happening. view article  arw

January 2208:30 AM

Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District leaders severed negotiations for a similar Islamic Games event earlier this week.In a letter sent Wednesday to Cy-Fair ISD Board President Julie Hinaman and Superintendent Douglas Killian, Abbott warned the district that it may not use taxpayer-funded school facilities to host an event connected to an organization he recently designated as a foreign terrorist organization.  “It has come to my attention that Bridgeland High School intends to offer public school facilities to host the 2026 Houston Islamic Games in October,” Abbott wrote. “Be aware I recently designated ‘the Muslim Brotherhood and its successor organization CAIR’ as foreign terrorist organizations and transnational criminal organizations under state law.” view article  arw

HISD to pilot ‘Future 2’ K-8 schools focused on AI, design thinking and accelerated learning

January 2208:30 AM

Houston ISD's state-appointed Superintendent Mike Miles says the district will pilot two schools designed to train students for a future where artificial intelligence "will be ubiquitous," even as key details about the plan remain unclear.  Miles briefly introduced the so-called "Future 2 Schools" during a back-to-school convocation, alongside a program for remote learning that has since been paused.  Miles' announcement about the new AI-focused schools came at the board of managers' meeting last week, amid renewed talk of potential school consolidations. HISD previously planned to close up to 10 schools next year, but has backed away from that. view article  arw

Greg Abbott calls for Cy-Fair ISD to cut ties with Houston Islamic Games

January 2208:26 AM

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is calling on Cy-Fair ISD to sever its ties with the 2026 Houston Islamic Games, which he says were scheduled for October at Bridgeland High School. In a Wednesday letter to the Houston-area school district, Abbott directed Cy-Fair ISD to terminate any agreements with the Houston Islamic Games. He said the district needed to do so because the New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) was allegedly one of the sponsors for the youth athletic competition. In November, Abbott declared CAIR — a nationwide civil rights organization — to be a foreign terrorist organization and barred the group from purchasing land in Texas. view article  arw

Concerns raised after audit reveals Weslaco ISD overspent $14 million

January 2208:26 AM

Weslaco ISD is set to hold a special meeting after a recent audit revealed the district overspent more than $14 million from the district’s general fund balance. The audit, presented during a Monday school board meeting, raised concerns over the district’s finances. According to school board members, the district’s previous chief financial officer, David Robledo, stated in June 2025 that the district had $85 million available for the 2026-2027 school year. However, the audit revealed the actual balance was only $71 million. view article  arw

When Dallas ISD board members meet Thursday to go over details of the district’s bond proposal, they’ll be looking at two options: One that school leaders say would increase property taxes but allow the district to make much-needed upgrades, and another that would keep property taxes the same but would leave much of that work undone. view article  arw

Federal judge dismisses voting rights lawsuit against Keller ISD

January 2208:25 AM

Keller ISD’s election system does not discriminate against Hispanic voters, a federal judge ruled as he dismissed a voting rights lawsuit against the district last week. In a Jan. 15 decision, U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor tossed the case and ordered the plaintiff’s legal team — the nonprofit arm of a firm that’s challenged election systems at school districts across North Texas — to explain why they shouldn’t be sanctioned for filing what he called a “baseless petition.” view article  arw
