Attorney General Ken Paxton issued the following statement directing all Texas Independent School Districts (ISDs) not enjoined by ongoing litigation to display copies of the Ten Commandments once Senate Bill 10 takes effect on September 1, 2025. “From the beginning, the Ten Commandments have been irrevocably intertwined with America’s legal, moral, and historical heritage,” said Attorney General Paxton. “Schools not enjoined by ongoing litigation must abide by S.B. 10 and display the Ten Commandments. Preventive Law: HB 6 and Special Education
During the 89th Regular Legislative Session, HB 6 made a number of changes to Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code and the content of the 2025-2026 Student Code of Conduct. Many of these changes will likely be welcomed by Texas public schools, such as the ability to have more discretion in the determination of appropriate behavioral consequences for a student found in possession of a VAPE device.
Former Alba-Golden ISD employee pleads guilty to stealing $29K
A Mineola woman has pleaded guilty to stealing over $29,000 from Alba-Golden ISD when she worked for the district.
Jade Sheridan Bowden, 28, was arrested on July 18 after being accused of stealing the money while working for the school as a financial officer from February 2024 to April 2025, according to the Wood County District Attorney’s Office.
As a result of her plea, Bowden was placed on probation for five years and ordered to pay $1,000 in fines. She will also pay $29,245.42 in restitution to Alba-Golden ISD.

North Texas school district dispels student overdose rumor, explains what happened
A North Texas school district is dispelling rumors that a student overdosed on campus last week.
Millsap ISD officials in a statement said that rumors of the overdose are not true. Instead, what happened was that three students on Aug. 29 were using a vape that contained THC and one of the students reported to school officials that they weren't feeling well.

Houston ISD has a new chief of human resources, the district confirmed Thursday. Chief of Human Resources Jessica Neyman was removed from her post effective Wednesday, and Deputy Chief of Human Resources Norma Castillo will serve as interim. The district did not comment on why the change occurred.

‘When I saw the video, I threw up’ | Houston mom wants justice after daughter attacked while walking home from school
Video shot by an anonymous bystander on Wednesday and posted to social media was shared with KHOU 11 by a very concerned mother who said it made her physically sick. "When I saw the video, I threw up," Angela Dixon said. "I fell to the floor, I threw up." Dixon's 13-year-old daughter, who we're not identifying, is seen in the video getting punched and kicked repeatedly. As the attack spilled into the street, the victim fell to the ground as school buses and other vehicles passed by.

A TxDOT crash report obtained by ABC13 reveals new details about an Aug. 13 Cleveland ISD school bus crash. Records state the 21-year-old driver told investigators he was "distracted" and drove off the road, where the bus hit an embankment, and traveled more than 240 feet before eventually coming to rest on its side.

North East ISD high school teacher dies on campus after medical emergency
A MacArthur High School teacher died on Thursday morning, the school’s principal said in an email obtained by KSAT. In the email, Principal Joaquin Hernandez confirmed that one of the school’s teachers died following a medical emergency during first period. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s office told KSAT that the teacher was Timothy Kitterman, 65. Kitterman’s cause and manner of death have yet to be determined.

UT-Austin Seeks To Hide Faculty Emails
Requested records include a professor’s emails related to core curriculum. UT-Austin is attempting to conceal faculty communications related to governance reforms. At issue are changes to “core curricula” that are expected to result from the passage of Senate Bill 37 during the regular legislative session. This measure changes several aspects of university administration, including granting additional oversight authority over mandatory courses to boards of regents. In universities, the phrase “core curricula” describes a set of requirements students must complete regardless of major. Typically, these classes comprise about a third of a student’s undergraduate coursework.

Texas launches downloadable form to exempt kids from school-required vaccines
Previously, parents had to wait for the state to mail them the exemption form. They still have to get the form notarized before submitting it to the school for enrollment purposes. Texas parents will no longer have to wait weeks for a vaccine exemption form to be mailed to them if they want their children opted out of state-required immunizations to attend school. This week, the state health agency quietly unveiled the new downloadable vaccine exemption form, the result of state Rep. Lacey Hull’s House Bill 1586 which went into effect on Monday. Along with the form, the Texas Department of State Health Services also published a document listing the benefits and risks of immunization. The new law does nothing to change the childhood vaccine schedule. Instead, it would allow parents to download at home a form that allows children to be exempted from being vaccinated in order to attend public schools. The parents can show the same filled out form for two years before having to fill out a new one. Before the new law, parents had to contact the state health agency and request the exemption form be mailed to them. Parents still have to get a notary’s signature before they can present the form to school officials.

Retailers relieved that Texas skirted a THC ban — again
When news broke Wednesday afternoon of a last-minute push to pass new, stricter regulations for consumable hemp products, the employees at Austin Vape & Smoke sprung into action. Zaquiri Hensen, a manager at the South Austin store, said he alerted his staff and other stores around the city before beginning to contact his legislators, urging them to reject any strict regulation or ban. Every customer that came into the store for the rest of the day was told to do the same, Hensen said. “I still watched the House stream just in case because you never know what’s going to happen on the House floor,” Hensen said. Hensen was finally able to relax around 9 p.m. when Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick announced in a post on X that the Senate would wrap up the second special session hours later, effectively closing out the Legislature without any new THC restrictions or a ban.

The attorney general argued that blocking the display of the Ten Commandments constitutes a misinterpretation of constitutional principles. Attorney General Ken Paxton is escalating efforts to require the display of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms, appealing a federal injunction and instructing districts not affected by ongoing litigation to comply with the new law. Following a federal judge’s decision to block enforcement of Senate Bill 10—which mandates that the Ten Commandments be displayed in every Texas public school classroom—Paxton has petitioned the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and requested that the case be heard en banc by all active judges, rather than by a three-judge panel.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Crowded around a workshop table, four girls at de Zavala Middle School puzzled over a Lego machine they had built. As they flashed a purple card in front of a light sensor, nothing happened. The teacher at the Dallas-area school had emphasized that in the building process, there is no such thing as mistakes. Only iterations. So the girls dug back into the box of blocks and pulled out an orange card. They held it over the sensor and the machine kicked into motion. “Oh! Oh, it reacts differently to different colors,” said sixth grader Sofia Cruz.

Lockhart ISD Latest Hit With Student Sex Abuse Lawsuit
A volleyball coach charged with sexually grooming and abusing an underage Lockhart Junior High School student is now the target of a civil lawsuit along with Lockhart Independent School District. Aaron Aguilar, 28, was arrested in April and charged with sexual performance by a child under the age of 14. He was later also charged with possession of child pornography. The victim’s mother filed a federal lawsuit against Aguilar and Lockhart ISD on August 25. Aguilar was no longer employed by Lockhart ISD at the time of his arrest.

Lawsuit Filed Against University of Texas Seeks to Neutralize ‘Campus Protection Act’
Multiple organizations are suing the University of Texas System as a means of undoing a new state law meant to counter disruptive activities on college campuses. The law in question is Senate Bill 2972, which took effect September 1. It was designed to protect freedom of expression for students while establishing guardrails to prevent the type of disruptive chaos that occurred at UT-Austin in 2024.

Texas school districts must decide whether to display Ten Commandments posters in every classroom before a new law requiring them to goes into effect Monday, even as its fate remains tied up in court. A federal judge enjoined 11 school districts from displaying the posters last week, in the wake of a community-led lawsuit, but Attorney General Ken Paxton appealed that ruling and said in a statement earlier last week that districts not enjoined by the court ruling must comply with the law, Senate Bill 10.

Two Durham Elementary teachers were removed from their classrooms and reassigned to "home duty" last week after Houston ISD made controversial curriculum changes at the campus. Angela Kelly, one of the two Houston ISD teachers who were reassigned, shared the reassignment memo with Houston Public Media. It doesn't include any details about the reasoning behind the personnel move, but Kelly said in an interview she was told at the dismissal meeting with the Durham principal and an HISD official "that changes needed to be made on the campus and that they needed to protect the culture."

Former Eanes ISD student taken into custody on suspicion of having a weapon near Westlake High
A former Eanes ISD student has been taken into custody after suspicion that he had a weapon in his car near Westlake High School on Wednesday.
In a letter to families, the district said several schools were placed in "SECURE" protocol Wednesday afternoon while district police responded to the incident near Westlake High. The district said it "heard unaffected schools were also placed in SECURE" and is investigating to learn more.

Texas House Cracks Down on Quorum-Busting With New Rules
The new punishments, however, are not binding on future legislative sessions. After Democrats staged a walkout earlier this summer to block congressional redistricting, the Texas House has moved to ensure such quorum-busting tactics carry heavy consequences in the future. The special sessions were marked by a two-week quorum break by Democrats, as well as a slew of new laws. The Texas House and Senate have adjourned sine die, bringing to a close the second special session of the summer called by Gov. Greg Abbott. The session followed a tumultuous first special session in which Democrat members of the House broke quorum for two weeks to delay passage of a new congressional map. When lawmakers eventually returned for the second 30-day session, that map was quickly approved and sent to Abbott’s desk for his signature.

Most Texas THC products remain legal after GOP leaders fail to break legislative impasse
The Texas Legislature ended another legislative overtime round without banning or further regulating most THC products after a monthslong fight between lawmakers to rein in the exploding hemp industry. The Texas House gaveled out of the second special session late Wednesday, leaving behind Senate Bill 6, which would have broadly banned consumable hemp products with any "detectable amount of any cannabinoid." Only those with cannabidiol or cannabigerol, which are both non-psychoactive, would have stayed legal. That means most forms of consumable hemp-derived products stay legal in Texas. There also remains no age limit on who can purchase these goods, which come in the form of gummies, smokeable flowers and drinks. Yet it is now illegal to sell — but not possess — THC vape pens under a separate law, passed earlier this year, that went into effect Monday.

Lubbock ISD Teacher, Track Coach Charged With Multiple Child Sex Crimes
A now-former Lubbock teacher and coach is accused of sexually assaulting an underage student multiple times at school and exchanging “numerous” nude images with the girl via cellphone. Jeremy Scott Maxfield, 41, was arrested by U.S. Marshals and charged with three counts of sexual assault of a child and one count of improper relationship between educator and student. The alleged assaults occurred in 2019 while the victim was a student in Lubbock Independent School District.

KIPP Academy Teacher Arrested for Indecency With a 15-Year-Old Student
A San Antonio KIPP charter school teacher was arrested after a 15-year-old female student accused the educator of forcibly hugging and fondling her at the end of the last school year. Priscilla Castro, 27, was arrested Friday night on a charge of indecency with a child by sexual contact, a second-degree felony punishable by 2 to 20 years in prison. Castro was a teacher at KIPP University Prep High School in San Antonio when the alleged sexual misconduct occurred on May 23.

State Sen. Creighton Positioned to Become Texas Tech Chancellor
A lawmaker will now be tasked with implementing the law he wrote. State Sen. Brandon Creighton is expected to be named the sole finalist for the Texas Tech University System’s Chancellorship. Cody Campbell, chairman of the Texas Tech Board of Regents, announced August 31 that “after a lengthy, thorough, and comprehensive search, I expect that the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents will unanimously name Senator Brandon Creighton as the Sole Finalist for our Chancellor of the Texas Tech University System.” Campbell further called Creighton “a strong voice in the fight to get our colleges and universities back on track and clearly shares the values and the vision of the Texas Tech community.”
