Attorney General Ken Paxton Instructs Texas Schools to Display the Ten Commandments in Accordance with Texas Law
Attorney General Ken Paxton issued the following statement directing all Texas Independent School Districts (ISDs) not enjoined by ongoing litigation to display copies of the Ten Commandments once Senate Bill 10 takes effect on September 1, 2025. “From the beginning, the Ten Commandments have been irrevocably intertwined with America’s legal, moral, and historical heritage,” said Attorney General Paxton. “Schools not enjoined by ongoing litigation must abide by S.B. 10 and display the Ten Commandments. The woke radicals seeking to erase our nation’s history will be defeated. I will not back down from defending the virtues and values that built this country.”

Preventive Law: HB 6 and Special Education
During the 89th Regular Legislative Session, HB 6 made a number of changes to Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code and the content of the 2025-2026 Student Code of Conduct. Many of these changes will likely be welcomed by Texas public schools, such as the ability to have more discretion in the determination of appropriate behavioral consequences for a student found in possession of a VAPE device.

Texas attorney general wants students to pray in school – unless they’re Muslim
Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general running for US Senate, has long believed in school prayer. Now, he’s prescribing precisely what type of prayer he wants the state’s 6 million public school students to recite.
“In Texas classrooms, we want the Word of God opened, the Ten Commandments displayed, and prayers lifted up,” Paxton said in a statement on Tuesday, encouraging students to say “the Lord’s Prayer, as taught by Jesus Christ”.

Private school vouchers are now law in Texas. Here’s how they will work.
Texas will give participating families about $10,000 to pay for their kids’ private schooling. Other details about the program, set to launch in 2026, are unclear. Gov. Greg Abbott on Saturday signed legislation authorizing a private school voucher program into law, marking the grand finale of an oftentimes ugly conflict that has largely defined Texas politics this decade. Senate Bill 2 will allow families to use public taxpayer dollars to fund their children’s education at an accredited private school or to pay for a wide range of school-related expenses, like textbooks, transportation or therapy. The program will be one of the largest school voucher initiatives in the nation.

Sen. Brandon Creighton’s switch from lawmaking to Texas Tech leader signals a new era for higher ed
As the clock wound down on the year’s second overtime legislative session, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, the powerful leader of the Texas Senate, took a few minutes to say goodbye to his right-hand man, Sen. Brandon Creighton: The architect of a recent bevy of laws reshaping higher education in Texas — from the ban on diversity, equity and inclusion programs to limits on protests and faculty’s influence on campuses — was stepping down to take a new job overseeing those very changes. Texas Tech regents voted Thursday to name the Conroe Republican their sole finalist for chancellor, the university system’s top job, betting that his political connections and influence at the Capitol will help secure funding, expand research opportunities and elevate the system’s profile.

UT-Austin Seeks To Hide Faculty Emails
Requested records include a professor’s emails related to core curriculum. UT-Austin is attempting to conceal faculty communications related to governance reforms. At issue are changes to “core curricula” that are expected to result from the passage of Senate Bill 37 during the regular legislative session. This measure changes several aspects of university administration, including granting additional oversight authority over mandatory courses to boards of regents. In universities, the phrase “core curricula” describes a set of requirements students must complete regardless of major. Typically, these classes comprise about a third of a student’s undergraduate coursework.

Texas launches downloadable form to exempt kids from school-required vaccines
Previously, parents had to wait for the state to mail them the exemption form. They still have to get the form notarized before submitting it to the school for enrollment purposes. Texas parents will no longer have to wait weeks for a vaccine exemption form to be mailed to them if they want their children opted out of state-required immunizations to attend school. This week, the state health agency quietly unveiled the new downloadable vaccine exemption form, the result of state Rep. Lacey Hull’s House Bill 1586 which went into effect on Monday. Along with the form, the Texas Department of State Health Services also published a document listing the benefits and risks of immunization. The new law does nothing to change the childhood vaccine schedule. Instead, it would allow parents to download at home a form that allows children to be exempted from being vaccinated in order to attend public schools. The parents can show the same filled out form for two years before having to fill out a new one. Before the new law, parents had to contact the state health agency and request the exemption form be mailed to them. Parents still have to get a notary’s signature before they can present the form to school officials.

Retailers relieved that Texas skirted a THC ban — again
When news broke Wednesday afternoon of a last-minute push to pass new, stricter regulations for consumable hemp products, the employees at Austin Vape & Smoke sprung into action. Zaquiri Hensen, a manager at the South Austin store, said he alerted his staff and other stores around the city before beginning to contact his legislators, urging them to reject any strict regulation or ban. Every customer that came into the store for the rest of the day was told to do the same, Hensen said. “I still watched the House stream just in case because you never know what’s going to happen on the House floor,” Hensen said. Hensen was finally able to relax around 9 p.m. when Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick announced in a post on X that the Senate would wrap up the second special session hours later, effectively closing out the Legislature without any new THC restrictions or a ban.

Texas Appeals Injunction Prohibiting Ten Commandments in Classrooms
The attorney general argued that blocking the display of the Ten Commandments constitutes a misinterpretation of constitutional principles. Attorney General Ken Paxton is escalating efforts to require the display of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms, appealing a federal injunction and instructing districts not affected by ongoing litigation to comply with the new law. Following a federal judge’s decision to block enforcement of Senate Bill 10—which mandates that the Ten Commandments be displayed in every Texas public school classroom—Paxton has petitioned the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and requested that the case be heard en banc by all active judges, rather than by a three-judge panel.

Girls fell behind boys in math during the pandemic. Schools are trying to make up lost ground
IRVING, Texas (AP) — Crowded around a workshop table, four girls at de Zavala Middle School puzzled over a Lego machine they had built. As they flashed a purple card in front of a light sensor, nothing happened. The teacher at the Dallas-area school had emphasized that in the building process, there is no such thing as mistakes. Only iterations. So the girls dug back into the box of blocks and pulled out an orange card. They held it over the sensor and the machine kicked into motion. “Oh! Oh, it reacts differently to different colors,” said sixth grader Sofia Cruz.

Texas school districts must decide whether to display Ten Commandments posters in every classroom before a new law requiring them to goes into effect Monday, even as its fate remains tied up in court.
