Private school vouchers head to Abbott’s desk to become law

April 2506:24 AM

The Texas Senate voted on Thursday to send legislation creating a statewide private school voucher program to Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk to be signed into law, all but concluding an ugly intraparty battle that has dominated state politics for much of the last two years.  Abbott has already said that he plans to sign Senate Bill 2, a $1 billion proposal allowing families to use taxpayer dollars to fund their children’s private school education. Similar legislation has historically run into opposition from Democrats and rural Republicans. But that changed last week, when the Texas House gave its stamp of approval to SB 2, a vote that included support from Republicans who opposed similar legislation in 2023.  Upon Abbott’s signature, the program will officially launch at the start of the 2026-27 school year.SB 2 would initially put $1 billion over a two-year period in taxpayer dollars toward education savings accounts that families could use for private school tuition and other school-related expenses, like textbooks, transportation and therapy. Notably, up to 20% of the program could go to wealthier families who earn 500% or more of the poverty rate, which would be about $160,000 or more for a family of four. view article  arw

Texas Parents Push Lawmakers To Deliver Public Education Reforms

May 0208:33 AM

Advocates are focused on stronger laws to address the “epidemic” of physical and sexual abuse in schools.  While school choice captured much of the attention during the first half of the legislative session, a parent-driven advocacy group has been laser-focused on reforming the existing government education system, which will continue to receive the vast majority of Texas’ 5.5 million students and the largest share of the state’s budget.  With the session drawing to a close, time is now running short.  Texas Education 911, an independent group of parent advocates, first began promoting policy solutions to parent-identified problems within the public school system ahead of the 2023 legislative session. view article  arw

Conservative Lawmakers Warn Texas House Is Running Out of Time To Pass GOP Priorities

May 0205:30 AM

With just over a month remaining in the 2025 legislative session, a group of conservative Texas House members gathered for a press conference to issue a stark warning to their leadership: time is almost up to deliver on Republican priorities.“Today is day 107 of our 140-day legislative session,” said State Rep. Tony Tinderholt (R–Arlington). “In 12 days, every House bill that is going to pass must be reported by its committee. The clock is ticking, and our Republican voters are looking for the Republican majority they elected to the Texas House to deliver.” -  view article  arw

Debate over partisanship, culture wars in Mansfield ISD at center of school board race

May 0205:00 AM

How do Mansfield ISD voters feel about national politics being at the center of their past four local elections? In the May 3 school board election, candidates may get their answer. School board president Keziah Valdes Farrar — who has run a campaign aligned with and backed by conservative City Council candidates and Republican political action committees — faces Ana-Alicia Horn, a challenger who said she wants nothing to do with partisan politics and has garnered the endorsements of eight former board members.  The race is one of three school board seats up for grabs on a ballot that asks district residents to respond to four years of seeing heightened outside political involvement, election integrity scandals and divisive policy debates. School districts across Texas also face looming budget shortfalls and ongoing debates over school vouchers and curriculum. Both Valdes Farrar, 44, and Horn, 40, list campaign priorities related to student success. Both are mothers of three, say a passion for children and education drive their races, and cite their Christian church involvement on their campaign websites. view article  arw

Letter to the editor: Supporting Roosevelt ISD bond critical for students

Report: Sunrise Centers are unfamiliar to Houston ISD staff, far from some of the neediest students

May 0108:25 AM

As Houston ISD shifts its non-academic student resources from the recently-shuttered wraparound services department to its Sunrise Centers, a report found that the centers may be out of reach for those who may need them most. While most Houston ISD students are about a 10-minute drive away from one of the district's seven Sunrise Centers — where students can access services including medical and mental health care, clothing and a food pantry — students living in Third Ward and Denver Harbor don't have easy access to one. The centers are also far from students living in the northwest areas of the city. view article  arw

Look for them at local parks and events all summer long—offering free access to books for readers of all ages. By engaging with books over the summer, students keep their minds active, maintain reading skills, and continue building vocabulary and comprehension. Even just a few minutes of reading each day can make a big difference in helping students return to school ready to learn and succeed. view article  arw

A now-discarded plan to split Keller ISD caused a stir. Lawmakers now want clear rules on how to divide districts.

May 0108:25 AM

Lawmakers discussed a bill Tuesday that would create new rules for school districts that want to split into smaller entities, months after a controversial, now-abandoned plan to break up Keller ISD raised questions about whether the district could do so without voters’ input. House Bill 5089, authored by Rep. Charlie Geren, R-Fort Worth, would set rules for how a school district could split off from an existing one. Under the bill, 20% of registered voters in each of the proposed new districts would have to sign a petition. If that threshold is met, an election would be held, and voters would decide whether to approve the split. The State Board of Education would oversee the election. view article  arw

The ruling caps a roughly four-year legal battle and adds to the growing number of school districts forced to change how voters elect trustees. U.S. District Court Judge Sim Lake ordered Spring Branch to switch after this May’s board election from a fully at-large system — in which all seven trustees are chosen by all voters in a district — to one where at least five trustees are elected only by residents of parts of the district. view article  arw
