More bus routes, staff raises and a $45m deficit, here are the takeaways from Cy-Fair ISD’s proposed 25-26 budget
Cy-Fair ISD is planning to use $45 million of savings to help provide raises and reinstate bus routes for 2025-26, officials said Wednesday. While leaders expressed gratitude for the increased funding that came with the $8.5 billion the Texas Legislature gave to public schools this year, Superintendent Douglas Killian said it still isn’t enough. After outcry from the community about busing cuts last summer, the board plans to vote on reinstating routes on Monday night, in addition to routes previously brought back.

Supreme Court clears the way for temporary nuclear waste storage in Texas and New Mexico
WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday restarted plans to temporarily store nuclear waste at sites in rural Texas and New Mexico, even as the nation is at an impasse over a permanent solution. The ruling does not mean nuclear waste will end up in West Texas. Texas legislators have sent a bill to Gov. Greg Abbott that reiterates the state's stance that nuclear waste may only be stored at the location where a reactor is operating. And Interim Storage Partners, which applied for a federal license to build a spent nuclear fuel storage site in West Texas, said in a statement that it does not plan to continue developing the project "without the consent of the State of Texas."

Former Texas state Sen. Kelly Hancock to become acting comptroller, run for permanent job
Republican state Sen. Kelly Hancock launched his campaign for state comptroller Thursday shortly after taking a senior position at the comptroller’s office. His appointment as chief clerk to Comptroller Glenn Hegar paves the way for Hanock, a North Richland Hills Republican, to become interim comptroller after Hegar leaves his office in June. And it gives Hancock an edge in a growing Republican primary race next year. “Kelly is a great fit to serve as the chief financial officer of Texas,” Hegar said in a statement, who is stepping down to become chancellor of the Texas A&M University System. “As a long-serving member of the Texas Legislature, he helped shape sound financial policy and authored the state’s conservative spending cap legislation” Hegar added that Hancock is honest, trustworthy, and an “all-around good guy.”

But for the most part, San Antonio scores remain largely flat, seeing a roughly 2% bump across reading and math grade level performance. While math scores across Texas are still not what they were before the pandemic, reading scores have overall exceeded 2019 performance, according to spring STAAR data released by the Texas Education Agency on Tuesday.

Texas lawmakers failed to pass a proof of citizenship law but made other changes to elections
This coverage is made possible through Votebeat, a nonpartisan news organization covering local election administration and voting access. Sign up for Votebeat Texas’ free newsletters here. After considering a number of bills that would significantly reshape election administration and voting access in the state, Texas lawmakers ultimately approved only a few, including legislation that would alter the schedule of the 12-day early-voting period to increase access. They also passed measures aimed at reducing rejections of mail-voting applications and ballots, and added new restrictions on curbside voting, but held off on some more controversial proposals. Among the bills that didn’t advance were Senate Bill 16, one of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’s priority bills, which would have imposed a strict requirement for voters to provide documentary proof of citizenship, and a measure that would have given state Attorney General Ken Paxton more authority to prosecute election crimes. Bills that would have permitted online voter registration, audits of hand-count results, and guns in polling sites also stalled.

Juneteenth
Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States. It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday's name, first used in the 1890s, is a portmanteau of the words "June" and "nineteenth", referring to June 19, 1865, the day when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War.[8][9] In the Civil War period, slavery came to an end in various areas of the United States at different times. Many enslaved Southerners escaped, demanded wages, stopped work, or took up arms against the Confederacy of slave states. In January 1865, Congress finally proposed the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution for the national abolition of slavery. By June 1865, almost all enslaved persons had been freed by the victorious Union Army or by state abolition laws. When the national abolition amendment was ratified in December, the remaining enslaved people in Delaware and in Kentucky were freed.

Amid Trump immigration crackdown, Texas reins in border spending and shifts focus to deportations
With border crossings at record lows, state authorities are being sent to arrest people accused of committing crimes in Texas after entering the country illegally. For four years, Texas’ Republican leaders argued President Joe Biden's immigration policies were so lax that they had no choice but to spend an unprecedented $11 billion in state money to secure the border. Now with President Donald Trump in office, illegal border crossings have sunk to historic lows — and the state is continuing to spend another $3.4 billion on border security over the next two years, more than four times what lawmakers ever budgeted before the Biden-era buildup.

Texas voters will have final say on 3 property tax exemptions in November
This November, voters across Texas will be asked to approve larger property tax breaks for homeowners and businesses. The three proposals passed the Texas House and Senate with nearly unanimous support in May, and Gov. Greg Abbott signed them into law June 16. But because the tax cuts would be enshrined in the state Constitution, voters will have the final say. “Do you think your property taxes are too high? So do I,” Abbott told residents of Robson Ranch, a senior living community in Denton, on June 16. “I’m going to sign three pieces of legislation that lower those taxes.”

Greg Abbott to push to abolish the state-mandated exams altogether. The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness exams, taken each year by students in grades three through eight and in certain high school courses, is designed to measure how well a "student has learned and is able to apply the defined knowledge and skills in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills," according to the Texas Education Agency. State lawmakers in both chambers authored bills to scrap the exam for the first time since 2012 this legislative session but ultimately failed to reach a compromise before a key deadline.

The mixed-bag results showed early literacy improvements, a key indicator of future academic success, but underline the challenges of preparing children for STEM-related jobs. Elementary students who took the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness exam this year made the biggest gains in reading across grade levels.
