Elon Musk wants to move SpaceX’s incorporation from Delaware to Texas

February 1508:00 AM

Delaware is traditionally where many of the United States' biggest businesses are incorporated for legal and tax purposes  SpaceX wants to move its business incorporation location from Delaware to Texas, according to a Wednesday filing to the Texas Secretary of State.  The move by the Elon Musk-owned company comes after a Delaware state judge struck down Musk's 2018 Tesla pay package, siding with a shareholder who had challenged it as excessive.  Delaware is traditionally where many of the United States' biggest businesses are incorporated for legal and tax purposes. It is seen as a desirable place to seek approval for mergers and litigate disputes, and doesn't levy sales tax or tax on profits from intellectual property.  The Delware court's ruling could potentially wipe out more than $51 billion of Musk's assets, barring any outcomes from an appeal. In the aftermath, Musk said he would move his business incorporations out of the state. view article  arw

Texas A&M students and faculty in Qatar slam decision to close Middle East campus

February 1408:42 AM

Professors and students on the Doha campus are devastated by the Board of Regents’ sudden decision to shutter the school by 2028.  Students and faculty at Texas A&M University’s Qatar branch are slamming the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents' abrupt decision last week to wind down the Doha campus after more than two decades.  At a Texas A&M faculty senate meeting Monday, several professors from Qatar called for more answers and a clear transition plan for staff and students there, many of whom they say are devastated by the decision.  “Our students can't understand how local Texan politics can unilaterally determine a weighty decision about a very successful campus that excels in education without any discussion or negotiation,” Brittany Bounds, a history professor at the Qatar campus, said at the meeting. She noted the move is especially confusing to the campus community since the school renewed its contract with the state-run Qatar Foundation in 2021, extending the teaching agreement for another 10 years. view article  arw

Houston police investigating motive of woman killed after opening fire at Joel Osteen’s megachurch

February 1408:42 AM

Authorities identified the gunwoman as Genesse Ivonne Moreno. The 7-year-old accompanying her remains in critical condition after also being shot.  Several law enforcement agencies are actively investigating the motives behind a Sunday shooting at pastor Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston, which has one of the nation’s largest congregations. The shooter, a woman who police identified as 36-year-old Genesse Ivonne Moreno, was fatally shot by off-duty officers. No one else at the church died.  Moreno entered the church at 1:55 p.m. Sunday wearing a trench coat and a backpack and carrying an AR-15-style rifle, police said. Officers said they are still investigating how Moreno obtained the gun. A 7-year-old child, believed to be Moreno's biological son, accompanied her into the church. view article  arw

Lubbock residents have long dreamed of cheaper electricity. Will Texas’ open market deliver?

February 1408:42 AM

LUBBOCK — For nearly 25 years, much of Texas’ population have lived in a city that participates in the state’s open energy marketplace. But not the residents of Lubbock, who have been serviced exclusively by one electric company — Lubbock Power & Light, the city’s municipal provider. For more than a decade, residents have desperately wanted an open market, sharing their dissatisfaction with their bills. Residents now have what they long wished for — Lubbock’s electric market is open. For several weeks leading up to the switch, which takes place Thursday, provider fairs have become the manifestation of the state’s energy marketplace. The city has hosted rows and rows of energy companies at the Lubbock Civic Center. With each one, dozens of smiling salespeople greeted residents with brochures, sweepstake prizes and promises of free nights of electricity and other deals to save big bucks. The Texas Tribune thanks its sponsors. Become one. view article  arw

Boy injured in Lakewood Church shooting not enrolled in school; CPS investigation underway

February 1408:42 AM

A 7-year-old boy shot in the head at Lakewood Church on Sunday suffered developmental and physical disabilities, court records show, and was not enrolled in public school, according to Conroe ISD officials. Genesse Ivonne Moreno, 36, allegedly brought her son with her to the church Sunday afternoon when she walked into a hallway and began firing an AR-style rifle, Houston police said. Moreno was shot and killed by police officers who were working security jobs at the church. The boy and a 57-year-old man were wounded in the exchange. It's unclear who shot them.  Moreno’s former mother-in-law Rabbi Walli Carranza, said on Facebook her grandson had suffered a brain injury in the shooting and was "clinging to life" at Texas Children's Hospital. view article  arw

Texas Public Policy Foundation Announces Legislative Priorities for 2025

February 1408:41 AM

As preparations for the 2025 legislative session begin, the Texas Public Policy Foundation has announced its priorities that include ending taxpayer-funded lobbying, expanding school choice, securing the Texas-Mexico border, and several additional policy issues for the next two years.  “Texas serves as a model and a beacon for the rest of the country to maximize individual liberty, promote a vibrant and growing economy, and ensure safe and secure communities,” said TPPF CEO Greg Sindelar in the announcement.   While recent legislative sessions have made tremendous progress, vigilance remains the price of freedom. From border security to low taxes, health care to education, Texans must not rest in making our state the freest and most prosperous place on Earth. TPPF’s legislative agenda again takes an aggressive approach to improving the lives of all Texans. view article  arw

Cy-Fair ISD board skirts vote on hiring school chaplains by affirming volunteer policy

February 1408:41 AM

Nearing the five-hour mark of Monday's board meeting, the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Board of Trustees voted to affirm their existing chaplain volunteer policy, opting out of a vote on whether to adopt a policy of employing chaplains. With a conservative super-majority of 6-1, it was a surprising decision for many community members who were anticipating that the board would approve a policy employing chaplains. Some members were so concerned, some in the group Cypress Families for Public Schools organized an effort to speak out against the policy, printing out U.S. History-themed signs for parents to hold up during the meeting reading: “Don’t mess with our parental rights” and “Don’t mess with religious freedom.”  The board, which includes some new members, had only two weeks left to take a record vote on the measure before the law's March 1 deadline. Senate Bill 763 allows school districts to open a chaplain position in their schools and pay them through the safety and security allotment from the state. view article  arw

Texas laws likely wouldn’t have stopped suspected Lakewood shooter from buying gun, expert says

February 1408:41 AM

Despite a history of arrests and misdemeanor convictions, Texas state law likely allowed alleged Lakewood Church shooter Genesse Moreno to purchase guns, experts said.  Moreno, 36, allegedly fired an AR-style rifle and was also carrying a .22-caliber rifle when she walked into Joel Osteen’s megachurch on Sunday afternoon and began shooting, according to police. Two off-duty officers working security shot and killed Moreno. Her 7-year-old son and a 57-year-old man were wounded in the exchange.  view article  arw

North East ISD trustees vote not to allow the use of chaplains as mental health volunteers

February 1408:40 AM

The North East Independent School District board of trustees voted Monday against creating a policy that would allow chaplains to be used as mental health volunteers across the district. Senate Bill 763, one of the hundreds of state laws that went into effect last year, gives districts the option of allowing chaplains to provide mental health services to students. Chaplains who are employed or are volunteering are not required to be certified by the State Board for Educator Certification. The law also requires every school board in the state to vote on whether or not they will allow chaplains to serve as counselors by March 1. view article  arw

A Texas State Board of Education candidate is running as a Republican and a Democrat

February 1408:40 AM

As Central Texas voters prepare for the March 5 primaries, they may notice something a bit unusual about a local State Board of Education race: one candidate's name appears on both the Republican and Democratic primary election ballots. D.C. Caldwell is a local educator running to represent District 10 on the State Board of Education. He's branded himself a "fusion" candidate, seeking the nominations of the Republican, Democratic, Libertarian and Green parties. view article  arw

North Texas school districts facing challenges making budgets add up

February 1408:40 AM

Fort Worth ISD announced it will lay off staff members amid a budget crunch. For school districts across North Texas, the math isn't adding up -- and budgets are falling short. Fort Worth ISD announced it will lay off some staff members, Dallas ISD said it will cut duplicate and under-enrolled programs, Richardson ISD is facing a "significant deficit" and Plano ISD has formed a committee to examine whether it needs to close some schools.  "It's definitely at what I would say is at a crisis moment," said Dallas ISD Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde. "I definitely think that all of our school districts are in similar situations financially."  view article  arw

In 2022, the Texas Supreme Court declined to kill a high-profile sex abuse lawsuit against former Southern Baptist Convention leader Paul Pressler and his longtime law partner, Jared Woodfill. For Justice John Devine, the case involved some familiar names: Years before taking the bench, he had worked at Woodfill and Pressler’s small Houston law firm. In fact, Devine’s tenure at the firm overlapped with the time that the plaintiff, a former employee of the firm, was allegedly molested by Pressler. Two other justices, who previously worked for the law firm representing the plaintiff, recused themselves. Devine didn’t — and instead dissented from the court’s 5-2 decision that allowed the suit to go forward after a challenge to its statute of limitations. view article  arw

Rural Texans, internet providers worry that feds’ broadband expansion plan will have a painfully slow rollout

February 1408:40 AM

A historic $3.3 billion federal investment in broadband could connect millions of Texans to the internet. But getting the money to the right hands could be a challenge.Texas is poised to receive more than $3.3 billion in federal money to fund a dramatic expansion of broadband, a historic investment in a state where 7 million residents lack high-speed internet connection.  But distributing that money appropriately and efficiently is a formidable challenge, especially for a relatively new state office still trying to build up a staff that will oversee the work.  And internet providers say they are simultaneously hopeful and skeptical about whether the incoming federal dollars will be enough to connect the most underserved Texans. Historically, other federal rural broadband funding programs have seen limited success because many companies who committed to providing broadband went into default after radically underestimating the costs to deploy broadband infrastructure in far-flung regions. Rural communities that have the greatest needs worry they will continue to be left behind. view article  arw

Texas sets record for grid-scale solar power, ranks third in residential rooftop solar

February 1408:40 AM

The Texas electricity market is basking in the power of utility-scale and commercial and residential rooftop solar installations, which are carrying a greater burden of the state's electricity needs. Solar farms set a record Tuesday for the amount of electricity they provided to the grid operated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas – 16,668 megawatts, enough to power more than 3.3 million homes in the state during periods of peak demand. The production smashed the previous record set at the end of January by more than 10,000 megawatts, according to Grid Status, which collects data from power grids across the country. Last year, Texas surpassed California as the state with the most solar installed on its dominant power grid. view article  arw

US Senators Cruz and Cornyn Split on Ukraine Funding Package

February 1408:40 AM

The legislation provides no funding to combat the invasion at the southern border. Over the objection of conservative members, the United States Senate passed a $95 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. Sen. John Cornyn joined most Democrats and 21 Republicans in voting to pass the package. Sen. Ted Cruz, meanwhile, voted against the measure. Cruz expressed concern that the measure included no funding for border security along the U.S. southern border, which has been a sticking point for the House. “It is important that Israel eradicates Hamas, that Taiwan remains resilient against China’s threats, and that Ukraine defeats Russia. I have consistently supported providing aid to ensure these allies are strong,” said Cruz. view article  arw

It's an addition to the school's Law Enforcement Pathway class. In class, Jonathan Wright reviewed how to scan and survey a potentially dangerous scene properly. At 18, he's already a licensed Level II security guard. Over the weekend, he worked his first paid assignment for a private security company. "It's very exciting, it's fun, it's very different from any other job that you experience," said Wright. He said it was the classes at Molina High that made him ready. "I was the youngest security guard there by a long shot," he said. "But I know just as much as them, so I feel that this class has well prepared me for that field." view article  arw
