Texas teachers union sues state education agency for investigating social media posts about Charlie Kirk
The Texas Education Agency received hundreds of complaints about educators’ online reactions to the conservative activist’s death. One of Texas’ largest teacher unions wants a federal court to block Education Commissioner Mike Morath and the state education agency from investigating teachers accused of making inappropriate remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination on social media, saying the act violates legally protected speech. A lawsuit the Texas American Federation of Teachers filed Jan. 6 argues that Morath “unleashed a wave of retaliation and disciplinary actions against teachers” when he urged school districts to report “reprehensible and inappropriate” content about Kirk’s killing last year.

Jury seated in trial for ex-officer accused in police response to Uvalde school shooting
CORPUS CHRISTI — A Texas judge seated a jury Monday in the trial of a former school police officer in Uvalde who was part of the hesitant law enforcement response to one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history and has been charged with failing to protect children from the gunman. Adrian Gonzales, one of the first officers to respond to the 2022 attack, is charged with 29 counts of child abandonment or endangerment in a rare prosecution of an officer accused of not doing more to save lives. Authorities waited more than an hour to confront the teenage shooter who killed 19 students and two teachers at Robb Elementary. Gonzales has pleaded not guilty, and his attorney has said the officer tried to save children that day.

Jury selected from hundreds in trial testing accountability after Uvalde shooting
A jury has been selected in the trial of a former Uvalde school district police officer charged in connection with the law enforcement response to the 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting. On Monday, more than 400 potential jurors were questioned about their knowledge of the failed police response to one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history. From that pool, 12 jurors and four alternates were selected for the trial. Opening statements are set for Tuesday morning. The trial was moved from Uvalde to Nueces County, where it is being held in Corpus Christi, after a judge determined it would be difficult to seat an impartial jury in Uvalde.

Abbott directs agencies to increase anti-fraud measures for Texas child care programs
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott wants state agencies to implement new “strong anti-fraud measures” to a program designed to help low-income families pay for child care. The call for increased scrutiny follows the Trump administration’s decision to freeze federal funding to Child Care Services programs due to a viral video claiming widespread fraud in Minnesota. In a letter sent Monday to the heads of the Texas Workforce Commission and Health and Human Services Commission, Abbott directs the agencies to identify “high-risk providers” participating in the program and conduct additional site visits “Texas’ percentage of improper payment rates is 0.43 percent, compared to Minnesota’s approximately 11 percent according to the most recently available federal data,” Abbott wrote in the letter. “However, more can be done to protect Texas children and taxpayers.”

Gov. Greg Abbott has a sweeping plan to abolish Texas’ school property taxes. Would it work?
Gov. Greg Abbott has a sweeping plan to abolish Texas’ school property taxes. Would it work? Gov. Greg Abbott announced his reelection campaign in November, promising to lower property taxes. His plan covers three areas, which The Texas Tribune is breaking down over a series of articles. This is Part One. Read Part Two here. FORT WORTH — Texas lawmakers have gone big to rein in the state’s property taxes, spending tens of billions of dollars toward reducing the annual bill homeowners and businesses pay each year to help pay for schools. State lawmakers have also put tighter limits on how much local governments can increase taxes to pay for public safety, parks and other services. Ahead of the 2026 election, Gov. Greg Abbott wants to go bigger.

Texas’ largest public transit system may come undone in 2026
DALLAS — A suburban mutiny against Texas’ largest public transit agency threatens to upend how tens of thousands of Texans get around in the state’s most populated urban area — at a time state transportation planners say the state needs more public transit. A quartet of Dallas suburbs — Plano, Irving, Farmers Branch and Highland Park — plan to vote in May on whether to leave Dallas Area Rapid Transit, or DART, following years of tensions between the suburbs and the North Texas region’s transit agency. Suburban officials complain that for how much they shell out to fund buses and light rail, their residents hardly use it. Among the four cities looking to pull out from DART, most kick in more sales tax dollars than they receive in bus service, rail and other forms of transit service, according to a consultant’s report last year. “We have just been dissatisfied with the service, the safety and certainly the ridership that is woefully low,” Plano Mayor John Muns said in an interview. “We’re paying an extraordinary amount for the service that we’re getting back.”

A national GOP push to exclude noncitizens from future redistricting could have big ramifications in Texas
The impacts of the latest fight over Texas’ political maps are still reverberating around the state, but there are other debates on the horizon. Future political representation could hinge on President Donald Trump’s renewed push to exclude at least some noncitizens from the population counts that help determine how political power is distributed in the U.S. In Texas, where Republicans pushed through a rare midcycle redistricting this year to try to maintain their advantage in Congress after the 2026 midterm elections, experts say that excluding noncitizens when drawing districts could open another way for the GOP to tighten its grip on the state Legislature and congressional delegation.
