Debate over partisanship, culture wars in Mansfield ISD at center of school board race
How do Mansfield ISD voters feel about national politics being at the center of their past four local elections? In the May 3 school board election, candidates may get their answer. School board president Keziah Valdes Farrar — who has run a campaign aligned with and backed by conservative City Council candidates and Republican political action committees — faces Ana-Alicia Horn, a challenger who said she wants nothing to do with partisan politics and has garnered the endorsements of eight former board members. The race is one of three school board seats up for grabs on a ballot that asks district residents to respond to four years of seeing heightened outside political involvement, election integrity scandals and divisive policy debates. School districts across Texas also face looming budget shortfalls and ongoing debates over school vouchers and curriculum. Both Valdes Farrar, 44, and Horn, 40, list campaign priorities related to student success. Both are mothers of three, say a passion for children and education drive their races, and cite their Christian church involvement on their campaign websites.

Letter to the editor: Supporting Roosevelt ISD bond critical for students
You may not be aware, but the high school freshman class has been eating on bleachers in the practice gym the past few years. Our students deserve that precious time at lunch, same as we all had as kids, to catch up with friends and relax.

Report: Sunrise Centers are unfamiliar to Houston ISD staff, far from some of the neediest students
As Houston ISD shifts its non-academic student resources from the recently-shuttered wraparound services department to its Sunrise Centers, a report found that the centers may be out of reach for those who may need them most. While most Houston ISD students are about a 10-minute drive away from one of the district's seven Sunrise Centers — where students can access services including medical and mental health care, clothing and a food pantry — students living in Third Ward and Denver Harbor don't have easy access to one. The centers are also far from students living in the northwest areas of the city.

A now-discarded plan to split Keller ISD caused a stir. Lawmakers now want clear rules on how to divide districts.
Lawmakers discussed a bill Tuesday that would create new rules for school districts that want to split into smaller entities, months after a controversial, now-abandoned plan to break up Keller ISD raised questions about whether the district could do so without voters’ input. House Bill 5089, authored by Rep. Charlie Geren, R-Fort Worth, would set rules for how a school district could split off from an existing one. Under the bill, 20% of registered voters in each of the proposed new districts would have to sign a petition. If that threshold is met, an election would be held, and voters would decide whether to approve the split. The State Board of Education would oversee the election.
