Austin ISD is set to cut 215 full-time educator salaries — 85 for elementary schools, 51 for middle schools and 79 for high schools — as it faces a $181 million budget deficit for the 2026-27 school year. These cuts are in relation to newly proposed teacher-student ratios, Superintendent Matias Segura said on Thursday. “The ability to serve our students in a way that we had a couple years back or even last year is going to be impacted,” Segura said. “We have not been able yet to get the funding we need to ensure that we keep up with the costs that we have. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said a former Humble ISD teacher is now behind bars, accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a former student while working in New Caney ISD. Arlington ISD is undergoing a reorganization as it deals with a $9 million budget shortfall, Superintendent Matt Smith announced to staff May 7. The changes, set to not impact classroom teaching positions, will see some open and filled positions dissolved within the central office, departments and campuses, according to the email Smith sent to staff. The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights opened an investigation into the Houston Independent School District on Friday over concerns the district may be discriminating against students with disabilities by separating them from their non-disabled peers. The list contains the names of individuals who are not eligible to work in public schools due to previous misconduct.  The Texas Education Agency has added 21 more individuals to the state’s “Do Not Hire” Registry, blocking them from working in any Texas public school amid ongoing concerns about student safety and educator misconduct.  Among the 21 individuals listed is Academy ISD bus driver William Blackburn, who was accused of sexually abusing a female student for 10 months. He was charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child, indecency with a child by sexual contact, and indecency with a child by exposure. view article arw

The president says he likes both Cornyn and Paxton as early voting nears in a closely watched GOP runoff.  The day after John Cornyn and Ken Paxton were forced into a runoff for U.S. Senate, President Donald Trump indicated he planned to endorse in the race.  Now, with early voting less than two weeks away, Trump says that endorsement decision could come “relatively soon.”  Asked Thursday whether he still planned to endorse in the runoff between John Cornyn and Ken Paxton, Trump replied, “I’ll make a decision.”  When asked when that decision could come, Trump answered: “Maybe relatively soon. The state’s debut Texas Education Freedom Account program, which set aside $1 billion to give families public funds for private school tuition and education services, capped at roughly 96,000 students this week.  Of those, 8,676 students are in the San Antonio area across 16 school districts. More than twice as many, 21,483, students originally applied for the funds.  “This first year is groundbreaking for Texas,” said Kelly Hancock, acting Texas comptroller of public accounts. Staff cuts shift instructional work to Lake Worth ISD principals under state takeover

Lake Worth ISD’s new superintendent wants principals focused less on broken air conditioners, transportation problems and daily operations — and more on what students are learning inside classrooms.  Superintendent Ena Meyers said the district’s academic goals are not changing. The work of supporting teachers will continue, but more of that responsibility will move to principals and assistant principals, she said.    To make that shift, the district’s state-appointed board of managers unanimously approved a reduction in force May 6 affecting campus instructional coaches and curriculum coordinators. During the same meeting, managers gave Meyers temporary authority to make hiring decisions and execute employment contracts — a move district leaders said will help Lake Worth ISD move faster to recruit and retain employees.   “Our campus instructional coaches have done a tremendous job of helping support our teachers and some of the curriculum and planning,” Meyers said. “We’re shifting that focus to our principals and our assistant principals.” view article arw

Paxton Launches Statewide Investigation To Enforce Ten Commandments and School Prayer Laws

The investigation centers on many of the districts that were involved in litigation halting enforcement of the Ten Commandments law.  Attorney General Ken Paxton is launching a statewide investigation into dozens of Texas school districts to see whether they are following new laws requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in classrooms. He is also requesting evidence that each school board voted on whether to put organized prayer time back into public schools.  Paxton’s office announced that it has sent investigative demands to nearly 30 ISDs—from urban systems like Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, and Cypress-Fairbanks to suburbs like Lake Travis, Dripping Springs, and Plano—ordering them to turn over records showing whether they are displaying the Ten Commandments and whether their boards have voted on implementing a daily prayer period.  view article arw

Paxton investigates FWISD, other Texas districts over Ten Commandments, prayer laws

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is investigating Fort Worth ISD and dozens of other school districts over whether they are complying with new state laws requiring Ten Commandments displays and board votes on prayer time in schools. Paxton announced the statewide probe Thursday, weeks ahead of a May 26 runoff election where the attorney general is challenging U.S. Sen. John Cornyn for his seat. Paxton directed districts to send documents related to two religion-related laws passed by Texas lawmakers in 2025.  “I will always fight for students’ fundamental right to pray in our schools and work to ensure that Texas kids are able to learn from the Ten Commandments daily,” Paxton said in a news release.  One law requires public schools to display donated copies of the Ten Commandments that meet certain specifications. Another requires school boards to take a record vote on whether to adopt a policy allowing designated time for voluntary prayer and reading of the Bible or other religious texts. view article arw
