Governor Abbott Directs Texas Universities To Ignore President Biden’s Unlawful Title IX Rewrite

May 0908:44 AM

Governor Greg Abbott today sent a letter to Texas' public university systems and community colleges directing them to not comply with President Joe Biden's recent revision of Title IX and to refrain from implementing any new system-wide policy related to this revision. "As I have already made clear, Texas will not comply with President Joe Biden's rewrite of Title IX that contradicts the original purpose and spirit of the law to support the advancement of women," reads the letter. "Last week, I instructed the Texas Education Agency to ignore President Biden's illegal dictate of Title IX. Today, I am instructing every public college and university in the State of Texas to do the same. I signed laws to ensure the safety of our students on campus and provide a process for adjudicating reports of sexual harassment and sexual assault with adequate due process for all parties involved, as well as laws to protect the integrity of women's sports by prohibiting men from competing against female athletes—and I will not let President Biden erase the advancements Texas has made." view article  arw

After nearly ten years of the DOI experiment, it’s no secret that these plans are powerful tools—especially if properly drafted. Whether your District is seeking to adopt a plan for the first time, to renew an expiring plan, or to amend an existing plan, you must ensure that you carefully consider including the latest and greatest exemptions. This quick article will address some of the most popular and emerging innovations worth considering.

Katy ISD Superintendent Ken Gregorski responded, stating there are certain rules to educating all children in Texas—regardless of a student’s immigration status. He said it would be unlawful to require a person’s immigration status for them to be enrolled. view article  arw

‘We have a problem’: Public schools in Texas face funding shortfalls

May 0908:41 AM

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Texas schools are among the lowest funded in the nation, and in the last legislative session, that did not change. Despite a record surplus, the per-student funding schools receive, the basic allotment, remained flat at $6,160, which has stayed the same since 2019. "Since that time, we've had about a 22% to 23% inflation rate, and this has put an enormous amount of pressure on public schools throughout the state of Texas," Kevin Brown, the director of the Texas Association of School Administrators, said. That impacts districts all over the state. ABC13 checked with local districts and found that in addition to HISD, Spring, Spring Branch, Katy, Tomball, and Conroe have projected budget shortfalls as they work toward finalizing their budgets for next year. view article  arw

It was fantastic.” He continued, stating Vidaurri made it as a lone finalist, becoming superintendent after 21 days of selection. “We picked the best one that day,” Oliveira said. view article  arw

Manor ISD offers mental health days to teachers and staff

May 0908:30 AM

MANOR, Texas — Mental health days are getting a show of support in one Central Texas school district. Manor ISD is allowing teachers and staff to have one mental health day each semester. It is an extra break teachers say they have needed for a long time. “Mental health is really important. It is like your sanity,” said Ian Supan who teaches 7th grade math at Manor New Tech Middle School. Normally, Supan says he is energized by working with students and helping them learn algebra, geometry and statistics. But at times the international teacher from the Philippines needs a day here or there to destress. Combating burnout is why he supports Manor ISD’s decision to give teachers and staff two mental health days each academic year. The extra days will be in addition to standard state and local leave days. view article  arw

Cy-Fair ISD superintendent responds to growing community concern over librarian cuts

May 0808:41 AM

Superintendent Douglas Killian assured concerned parents Monday that he is working to increase some lesser-known funding avenues in an attempt to close the $138 million deficit that forced Cypress-Fairbanks ISD to cut hundreds of staff positions, including half of the district’s librarians, from its 2024-25 budget proposal. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is banding together with some area districts, including Clear Creek ISD, to try to get the state to return part of an optional homestead exemption, Killian said at Monday’s regular board meeting. He is also pushing ways to increase faltering student attendance. “Our kids aren’t attending like they used to and that’s costing us money. We made the option to do a local optional homestead exemption,” he said. “It’s in vogue to blame other people, but we’re also partially responsible for the situation we’re in.” view article  arw

3rd student charged in connection to ‘violent’ attack plan at North Texas middle school

May 0808:40 AM

A third student at a far north Fort Worth middle school has been charged in connection with creating and editing an online document that detailed a planned attack against students and staff, Northwest Independent School District officials said.  Other students from Wilson Middle School were investigated, but found not to have engaged in a terroristic threat, district officials said Monday in a letter to families.  A tip from a parent during school on May 1 led officials to the “troubling and violent document,” which contained plans to attack Wilson Middle School and listed 25 students and seven staff members as targets.  District officials informed Wilson Middle School families and employees about the document in a letter last week and said two students had been arrested with pending felony charges. An investigation found a third student was also responsible for the threatening document, according to Monday’s letter. All three students have been charged with a felony terroristic threat, the school district said. view article  arw

Gov. Greg Abbott orders Texas to ignore Biden administration’s new federal protections of LGBTQ+ students

May 0808:38 AM

Gov. Greg Abbott ordered the Texas Education Agency on Monday to ignore a Biden administration rule that expanded federal sex discrimination protections to include LGBTQ+ students. The Biden administration recently revised the rules for Title IX, the sweeping civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination at federally funded colleges and K-12 schools. The new rules, which are set to go into effect in August, redefined sex discrimination and sex-based harassment to prevent misconduct based on sex stereotypes, pregnancy, gender identity and sexual orientation. It codifies initial guidance documents that prompted Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to sue the Biden administration last year. view article  arw
