History repeated itself when the Guadalupe River swept away Camp Mystic. Why few lessons were learned after the 1987 flood.

August 1408:33 AM

KERR COUNTY — Lavonda Koons gripped the back of the driver’s seat, watching as the Guadalupe River rose quickly around her stalled school bus. Through the rearview mirror, she saw a van behind them sinking into the floodwaters.  She locked eyes with her husband who was driving the bus. It was still raining and the sky was dim with the early light of dawn. About five car lengths away, they could see dry land. They needed to get the kids to safety.  With water creeping higher, her husband told the children to go. The group stepped out of the bus into the cold, murky flood. They linked arms forming a human chain.  The roar of rushing water made it impossible to hear each other. The current swept past Koons’ chest. view article  arw

Fort Worth partnership with ICE not imminent, council members say

August 1408:32 AM

As federal government officials ramp up immigration enforcement and deportations across the country, Fort Worth city officials appear to have no plans to actively target, identify or detain undocumented residents. Five City Council members — Alan Blaylock, Carlos Flores, Mia Hall, Jeanette Martinez and Chris Nettles — told the Fort Worth Report that the council has not had formal discussions on how to approach immigration enforcement locally. Mayor Mattie Parker and the other five council members did not return requests for comment.  view article  arw

Former Texas Governor Rick Perry has a very illegal new obsession

August 1408:30 AM

Now, the two-time presidential candidate and semi-disgraced Energy Secretary wants you to know he has a new hobby: psychedelic drugs.  view article  arw

Florida To Open “Deportation Depot” — Setting Up Model for Other States

August 1408:17 AM

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — U.S. Senator John Cornyn visited El Paso on Monday for a tour of the new U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) migrant processing and detention facility at Fort Bliss.  The facility, known as Camp East Montana, or "Lone Star Lockup" as Cornyn called it, branding it in a similar way that the immigration detention facility in Florida was branded the "Alligator Alcatraz," is set to open later in August.  During his visit, Sen. Cornyn reportedly received a briefing on the facility's operations from ICE officials and an update on Fort Bliss operations from General Curtis Taylor.  Cornyn said this new facility is for migrants with criminal convictions or under criminal charges who have no legal basis to being in the country and are under final order of deportation.  Cornyn added that this facility will be for single migrants and no families or children will be kept here. view article  arw

NIXON: ‘Texas Can Redraw Its Maps Anytime. And the Courts Agree.’

August 1405:01 AM

Far from destroying democracy, mid-decade redistricting reflects processes that are messy, political, and entirely accountable to voters.  Texas finds itself once again embroiled in a familiar political storm. Republicans control both chambers of the legislature and the governor’s office and are considering revising the state’s congressional map before the next census.  Democrats and their allies in the press are portraying the move as a threat to democracy. “Mid-decade redistricting!” they cry. “Republican partisans drawing Republican seats is an outrage!”  But Republicans are simply engaging in the same political hardball Democrats themselves played for decades when they were in charge, and the courts have repeatedly stated that the practice is perfectly legal. view article  arw

All Bets Are Off in Texas Online Sports Betting

August 1405:01 AM

In apparent defiance of state law, an internet platform is providing an avenue for Texans to participate in online sports betting. While other states have been quick to take the company to court, Texas has not.  Kalshi is a platform that allows individuals to purchase event contracts, a highly liquid investment asset, on a Designated Contract Market (DCM). Users can bet on political, economic, and cultural outcomes, among others.  On the website, event contracts are presented as binary options for individuals to wager on their prediction of the outcome of an event, including sports events. The winning prediction receives a payout upon the expiration date. view article  arw

AG Paxton Secures Commitment From Kellogg’s To Eliminate Artificial Dyes

August 1405:00 AM

The food giant had previously removed artificial coloring from cereals sold in countries with stricter ingredient safety requirements.  Attorney General Ken Paxton has announced that Kellogg’s will permanently remove artificial dyes from all of its cereals by the end of 2027. This outcome follows a months-long investigation and negotiations between his office and the food giant, culminating in a legally binding Assurance of Voluntary Compliance. Kellogg’s is the first major food manufacturer in the U.S. to legally commit to removing artificial food colorings from its cereals. view article  arw

August 1405:00 AM

With the first special session winding down and the Texas House still without a quorum, ABC13 in Houston is reporting that House Democrats may soon return to Austin.  The outlet says multiple sources confirmed Democrats plan to come back to the state, though the exact date remains unclear. According to the report, Democrats believe they’ve “accomplished their mission” by stalling the first special session and drawing national attention to Republicans’ mid-decade congressional redistricting effort.  While the exact timing of their return remains uncertain, sources have indicated it could happen as soon as this weekend. view article  arw

The records also shed light on previous concerns about shooters’ classroom behavior. Abbott vows to immediately call Texas lawmakers back to work if special session ends without new maps

August 1308:40 AM

The state's top three elected officials — Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dustin Burrows — said Tuesday the Legislature will adjourn its current overtime session on Friday, and the governor will immediately call another special session with an agenda that could include more conservative items.  Lawmakers are poised to finish the session without passing any new laws after Texas House Democrats left the state last week to stop the passage of a new congressional map drawn with an aim of netting five more GOP seats in the U.S. House. view article  arw

August 1308:39 AM

Legacy High School and Legacy Freshman are returning to Lee High School and Lee Freshman School; the Midland Independent School District voted 4-3 in favor on Tuesday. The decision came after a four-hour meeting and more than 50 public comments. In 2020, Robert E. The name has remained a point of controversy, dividing parents, students, teachers and alumni. view article  arw

Along Guadalupe River, more than a dozen summer camps have structures in flood zones

August 1308:38 AM

Most of the camps were built decades ago, before modern modeling and flood maps. Counties have little power to regulate construction flood plains.  The all-girls Christian summer camp where 27 people, most of them children, were swept away and killed by the July 4 flooding in Kerr County was just one of 13 summer camps along the Guadalupe River built on land prone to flooding.  The two Camp Mystic cabins where most of the flood victims were sleeping are in the Guadalupe River floodway, an area along waterways considered to be the most hazardous during a flood. Many of Mystic’s other buildings are located in the 100-year floodplain, considered to be less hazardous than a floodway but still prone to flooding during a severe storm. view article  arw

GOP polling shows that after clash over THC Abbott saw higher approval ratings while they went down for Patrick -

August 1308:32 AM

Recent polling shows both President Donald Trump's and Governor Greg Abbott's approval ratings have dropped into net negative territory among Texas voters. Governor Abbott's decreased favorability is significantly linked to public opposition to Senate Bill 3, a near-total ban on THC products, which he ultimately vetoed. President Trump's approval in Texas has gone negative for the first time in his second term, largely due to Texans' concerns about his performance on the economy and inflation. view article  arw

HISD families react to enrollment drops, test score jumps and cellphone ban on the first day of school

August 1308:30 AM

Roughly 170,000 students kicked off a new school year at HISD Tuesday, as enrollment continues to shrink about 4% a year over the past two years under state-appointed leadership. The district plans to announce an undetermined number of school closures later this year due to years of declining enrollment.  HISD has seen numerous changes in that span, including the controversial New Education System, teacher turnover, enrollment declines, and improvements in state test scores and accountability ratings. Additionally, the district had to implement the state's new law banning student cellphone use during the school day as this academic year kicks off. view article  arw

Liberty Hill ISD proposes potential tax-rate election

August 1308:30 AM

LHISD has lowered the tax rate 37 cents over six years. Prop A would add 6 pennies back to the tax rate.  Prop A adds funding for teacher salary increases, instructional programs, and extracurricular programs.  State and federal officials have cut education funding. At the same time, inflation has driven up LHISD operating costs such as utilities, fuel, and insurance.  LHISD has already cut $2 million in expenses. If Prop A does not pass, LHISD will have to make additional cuts, which may include up to 10 percent of our teaching staff. view article  arw
